The William and Mary men's and women's swimming teams will host Delaware Saturday morning at 11 a.m. in Williamsburg, in the last home meet of the 2011-12 season. Before the first event, the Tribe will hold a brief ceremony honoring its 11 seniors who will graduate in May.
Scouting the Tribe
The William and Mary teams have been swimming very well since the turn of the New Year, with both teams turning in tough performances in losses to Virginia Tech and East Carolina. The women also swam Campbell last week, winning handily against the Camels. Heading into Saturday's meet, the men are 3-4 overall and 2-1 in the Colonial Athletic Association, while the women are 6-5, 3-2 in the league.
Scouting the Blue Hens
Delaware's men's team is 5-3 overall and 1-3 in the CAA, but has won both of its meet this month going away; 214-86 over Drexel and 197-51 Wednesday night against Widener. The Blue Hens women also cruised against Drexel and Widener, but fell in a close meet against Northeastern, 151-149, to stand at 6-3 overall and 2-3 in the conference.
Notes
- The top points-getter for the women's team this year has been senior
Molly Emery,
with 16 victories and 234 total points. Her wins
have boosted Emery's career-total to 57, sixth-best all-time. Emery's 16 wins matches the career-high she collected last season. Second for the Tribe women with 173 points and 13 wins is freshman
Brodde Lamb, while
Sara Shaner is third with 11 wins and 158 points.
- On the men's side, sophomore
Andrew Strait
leads the way with a career-best 11 wins and 155 points. Senior Even Mulloy is second with eight wins and 121 points, while
Stephen Fay (six wins) and
Sidney Glass (seven wins) are tied with 105 points apiece.
-
Stephen Fay's six wins in 2011-12 have lifted his career total to 23 victories, just one shy of tying Jeff Collier '09 for 10th in school history.
Andrew Strait is also closing in fast on the top-10, with 21 tallies in just two years. In addition to needing three wins for the career top-10, Strait is also just three wins away from joining the single-season top-10. Three athletes have scored 14 wins in a year, most recently Shawn Matthews '09 in 2007-08.
- Both womens' backstroke records were shattered during the three-day Terrapin Invitational the weekend before Thanksgiving, as
Molly Emery and
Liz Glenn
shouldered their way to the top of the Tribe's all-time lists. Emery
reset the 100 back record by nearly three-quarters of a second during
her preliminary heat, timing 55.76 seconds to beat
Julia Applebaum's
'11 mark of 56.48 set at the CAA Championships last February. Glenn,
who set the freshman record as well, slid through the water to a 2:00.03
performance in the 200 back to claim the record away from senior
Hailey Hewitt (2:00.18 at the 2011 CAA meet).
- The third school record to fall was in the 1,650 freestyle, an event
that will also be swum Saturday against the Hokies. Junior
Caylyn Tate touched the wall in 16:53.08, besting the time of 16:53.22 put up by
Meghan Baker last February. Freshman
Liz Collins
also joined the record-parade in the 100 breaststroke, timing 1:04.67
in the prelims and 1:04.53 in the finals to beat out the old freshman
record of 1:05.21 set by Bryanne Matthews '06 in 2003.
- In the last meet at home, against Virginia Tech on Jan. 14, 11 pool records were shattered by the Tribe and the Hokies. Included in the total was
Caylyn Tate's 17:12.35 in the 1650 free, and
Hailey Hewitt's 2:02.16 in the 200 back.
