WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - After
capturing a CAA road victory against VCU on Thursday evening, the William and Mary Tribe women's
basketball team returns home to Kaplan Arena on Sunday, as it welcomes league
foe UNCW to town. Tip-off from
Williamsburg is scheduled for 2 p.m.

Tribe Storylines
- W&M enters Sunday's league
tilt carrying an overall record of 10-15 and a CAA ledger of 3-11. In its last outing, the Green and Gold
defeated rival VCU, 66-63, inside of the Siegel Center. Senior guards Taysha Pye and Katherine DeHenzel demonstrated their senior leadership in the victory over the Rams. Both players poured in 15 points each, but
their hustle plays and savvy decision-making propelled the Tribe to the win.
- Leading the Tribe is a couple of
juniors having career seasons - Janine Aldridge and Emily Correal. Aldridge
is averaging a team-high 14.1 points per game on 42.6 percent shooting from the
floor. Now the College's all-time leader in 3-pointers made with 213, the
Massapequa, N.Y., native is connecting on 40.8 percent of her attempts from
long distance. For the season, Correal is averaging 13.6 points and 8.8
rebounds per contest. At one point during the year, the Venetia, Pa.,
native recorded six straight double-doubles. Correal's most recent
double-double, consisting of 14 points and 12 boards, at Hofstra was her 10th
of the season.
- Sunday's matinee from Kaplan Arena will
be the second regular season match-up between W&M and UNCW this
season. On Feb.5, the College fell in a
hard fought affair at Wilmington, 80-77.
William and Mary leads the all-time series against the Seahawks, 30-27.
Scouting UNCW
Cynthia Cooper-Dyke is in her second season as the UNCW head
coach, and carries a record of 39-19 in her two seasons at Wilmington.
The Seahawks enter Sunday's game with an overall record of 15-10 and a CAA
ledger of 8-6. On Thursday evening, UNCW
dropped their second straight decision with a 63-52 loss at league foe James
Madison. Karneshia Garrett led the
Seahawks with 11 points and 13 rebounds.
Abria Trice and Jessica Freeman each tallied 11 points in the defeat.
Leading a balanced Wilmington attack is sophomore guard
Alisha Andrews. For the year, Andrews is
averaging a team-best 12.8 points a game. A native of Stone Mountain,
Ga., Andrews notches 2.9 steals per contest, which ranks 31st in the
country. Forward Kameshia Garret chips in with 9.2 points and 7.2
rebounds per outing.
As a team, the Seahawks are averaging 62.8 points per game,
which ranks eighth in the CAA, while ranking third in 3-pointers made per
outing at 5.6. Defensively, UNCW allows 65.6 points per game, which is
seventh in the league, however the Seahawks rank first in the CAA averaging
10.5 steals per contest.
The Only CAA Team
No, its not the fast-paced
Pride of Hofstra, nor is it the high-octane offense of Delaware, but its the William
and Mary Tribe who is the only school in the CAA with four players in double
digit scoring totals. Through 25 games
this season, four players from the Green and Gold squad are averaging 10 points
or more per contest. Janine Aldridge
leads all Tribe scorers averaging 14.1 a game, while Taysha Pye pours in 14.0 a
contest. Emily Correal and Jaclyn McKenna
round out the double-digit figure scorers, tallying 13.6 and 10.5 per game.
Discipline Defenders
Juniors Janine Aldridge and Chanel Murchison are regarded as two of the Tribe's best
defenders, and for good reason. Neither
Aldridge nor Murchison have yet to foul out of a game during their W&M
careers. Aldridge has dawned the Green
and Gold 94 times and has yet to be disqualified. Murchison has appeared in 53-career contest,
and not once has the former Colonial Forge H.S. standout committed five fouls.
Last Meeting vs. UNCW
Only two weeks have
passed since the Tribe and Seahawks last met on the hardwood. In that contest on Super Bowl Sunday (Feb. 5),
UNCW narrowly edged a gritty W&M squad playing in its third consecutive
road game, 80-77. Junior Emily Correal
lead the Green and Gold effort, tallying 22 points on 10 made field goals. Junior Janine Aldridge poured in 17 of her
19 total points in the second half against the Seahawks, while junior center
Jaclyn McKenna scored 14 points and pulled down 10 rebounds.
Down 78-71 with just 1:31 remaining,
the College orchestrated a final charge.
An Aldridge drained 3-pointer cut the gap to 78-74. On the ensuing
inbounds, W&M's stifling defense forced a five-second violation, giving the
ball back to the College. Capitalizing off the UNCW mistake, McKenna laid
it in off the glass and in the act was fouled. McKenna connected from the
charity stripe, cutting UNCW's margin to 78-77 with just 38 seconds left.
Two made free throws by Wilmington's Alisha Andrews put the Seahawks up
three. With time winding down a DeHenzel 3-pointer sailed just right of
the basket, and UNCW escaped with the 80-77, victory.
Tribe in the National Rankings
In the latest national rankings released by the NCAA on Feb. 17, William and
Mary and its players were well represented in some impressive categories.
As a team, W&M ranks 41st nationally in scoring, averaging 70.4 points a
game. The College is ranked 11th in the country in 3-point field goal
percentage (37.2 percent) and 27th in assists per game at 15.9.
Individually, junior Janine Aldridge's 3.4 made triples per game ranks fourth
nationally, and her 3-point field goal percentage of 40.8 percent stands at 18th-best
in the nation. Senior guard Katherine DeHenzel checks in at 18th
nationally averaging 5.6 assists per game, and junior forward Emily Correal
comes in at 30th in the country with 10 double-doubles on the season.
