The William and Mary men's track and field team registered its best single day of the season so far Saturday at the Virginia Tech Challenge, achieving 10 IC4A-qualifying marks and seven lifetime-best performances in three events.
1,000m Run
In the 1,000m run, senior
Chris Tyson (Arlington, Va.) earned his third overall IC4A qualifying time and second of the weekend with a 2:25.18 showing for third place. A lifetime-best for Tyson, the performance is the eighth-fastest ever run by a Tribe athlete and ranks him sixth on the all-time performers list. Tyson is also qualified for the IC4A Championships in the mile, and in the 800m after his 1:52.53 showing last night.
Also qualifying in the 1,000m was senior
Liam Anastasia-Murphy (Gloucester, Mass.), who ran 2:28.49 for seventh overall. Sophomore
David Gunnerson (Yorktown, Va.) made it a trio of qualifiers when he crossed the line in 2:28.89, good for ninth place.
Mile Run
In the mile, junior
John Muller (LaGrangeville, N.Y.) crossed the line more than a second faster than he ever had before to run 4:07.69 and finish second overall. Muller's time qualifies him for the IC4A meet, and ranks the junior 13th in school history indoors in the mile. Also qualifying for the IC4A meet was sophomore
Joshua Mercado (Citrus Heights, Calif.), who improved his lifetime best by more than two seconds down to 4:14.86.
3,000m Run
The Tribe picked up a whopping five qualifiers in the 3,000m, led off by sophomore
Rad Gunzenhauser (Pittsburgh, Pa.), who improved his previous best by nearly five seconds down to 8:16.80 for second place. Right behind him was
Alex McGrath (Marlborough, N.H.), in 8:18.42 for third, and sophomore
Andrew Ryan (Gloucester, Mass.) was fourth in 8:20.48. Ryan's time was a massive 18.5 seconds better than he'd ever run the distance before. Senior
Tom Burke (Edina, Minn.) also ran a qualifying time of 8:21.34 for sixth place, and
Josh Hardin (Sterling, Va.) rounded out the qualifiers in seventh, with a time of 8:23.27.
High Jump
Junior
Ben Katz (Manakin-Sabot, Va.) also competed on Saturday, taking second in the high jump with a clearance of 2.00 meters (6-6.75). Katz is already qualified to the IC4A Championships in the event, thanks to his 2.05m (6-8.75) at CNU last month.
William and Mary returns to action in two weeks, competing at the IC4A Championships in Boston, Mass., March 3-4.
