WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - Fresh off an upset of a national top-20 foe, the William and
Mary women's tennis team will hit the road for a pair of matches against nationally-ranked
competition at the Murr Tennis Center in Cambridge, Mass. The Green and Gold
will face No. 71-ranked Harvard at 3 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 25. The following
day, W&M meets Big XII foe and No. 64-ranked Kansas State in a neutral site contest at
noon.
The Tribe rallied from a 3-0 deficit in pulling out a 4-3
victory over No. 19-ranked Mississippi on Tuesday. Junior
Hope Johnson got
W&M on the board with her first dual-match win of the season in straight
sets at the No. 4 slot, before freshman
Leeza Nemchinov held on for a three-set
victory at the No. 3 position, improving to 3-1 in league play. Senior
Anik Cepeda trailed 5-3 in the third set
at the No. 5 post, before reeling off the final four games to tie the match at three in notching her team-leading 10th win of the season. Junior
Jeltje Loomans put the cap on the Tribe upset with a comeback three-set win at the No.
2 slot. The victory was the Tribe's first over a national top-20 foe since the
2009 season as the Green and Gold improved to 3-1 during the dual-match season.
Kansas State will open the season with the Tribe on
Saturday. Junior Petra Niedermayerova leads the way for the Wildcats with a
national singles ranking of No. 15. The two-time All-Big XII selection is 14-5
this season. She teams with senior Karla Bonacic to comprise
the No. 30-ranked doubles team in the country. The pair is 8-4 on the year and
coming off a win over the No. 18-ranked team in the country at the Georgia
Invitational last weekend. Saturday will be the first-ever meeting between the
two schools.
Harvard enters the weekend with a 1-0 mark on the season,
following a 7-0 victory over Cleveland State at home on Jan. 20. W&M leads the
all-time series with the Crimson at 22-7. Last season, Harvard snapped a
19-match losing streak to the Tribe with a 5-2 victory in Williamsburg. The
Green and Gold claimed the last meeting between the teams in Cambridge as
Jeltje Loomans claimed a three-set, come-from-behind victory at the No. 2
position to clinch a 4-3 Green and Gold victory.
Following the two-match trip to Cambridge, the Tribe returns
home to open CAA play against UNCW on Saturday, Feb. 2. The W&M-Seahawk
match, which starts a five-out-of-six match stretch at home, is slated for a 5
p.m. start time at the McCormack-Nagelsen Tennis Center.
