WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - William and Mary juniors
Maria Belaya and
Jeltje Loomans
were named the Colonial Athletic Association Women's Tennis Doubles Team of
the Week, the league announced on Tuesday. It marks the sixth time in the last
two years that Belaya and Loomans have been named the CAA Doubles Team of the
Week.
Belaya and Loomans, who are ranked No. 4 nationally in the
ITA doubles poll released on Tuesday, opened the dual-match campaign at 6-1 and
own victories in each of their last four contests. Overall, the pair is 15-2 on
the year. Highlighting the duo's effort recently was a victory over the No.
34-ranked doubles team in the country from Kansas State in helping the Green
and Gold to the doubles point against the No. 42-ranked Wildcats. Belaya and
Loomans helped the Tribe to the doubles point with a victory at the No. 1 spot
in the Tribe's CAA-opening win over UNCW on Feb. 2.
Along with the CAA weekly honor, the Tribe moved up in the
Campbell's ITA National Rankings released on Tuesday. After entering the
rankings for the first time at No. 53 on Jan. 30, W&M ascended to No. 47 in
the latest poll. The Tribe is 6-2 on the young season, its best start since
2008, following a 4-3 win at ACC-foe Virginia Tech on Feb. 9.
The Tribe returns home to open a four-match homestand with
Big XII foe West Virginia on Saturday, Feb. 16, at 1 p.m. W&M will face No.
30 South Carolina in Williamsburg on Sunday, Feb. 17, at 1 p.m. The College
will face Penn and James Madison as part of a doubleheader on Saturday, Feb.
