WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - To the victors go the spoils, and those distinctions continued to roll in for the William and Mary women's tennis team this week. After clinching the Tribe's 4-3 upset of No. 30-ranked South Carolina,
junior
Maria Belaya was named the Colonial Athletic Association Player of the
Week, the league announced on Tuesday. As a team, W&M continued its
ascension of the Campbell's Intercollegiate Tennis Association National Rankings, moving up to No. 37 in the
poll.
The No. 37 national ranking marks the highest for the Green and
Gold since it was No. 32 on Feb. 18, 2010 following a win over then-No.
27-ranked Florida International. With its weekend wins over West Virginia and
No. 30 South Carolina, the Tribe improved to 8-2 on the season, its best start
since winning 11 straight to open the 2007 campaign.
Belaya, who earned her second weekly CAA honor in as many
weeks, upped her season ledger to 12-8 overall and 6-4 in dual-match play with
a pair of wins during the week. She downed Audrey Wooland of
West Virginia, 6-4, 6-0, at the top position in the Tribe's 6-1 victory over the Mountaineers. With
the Tribe leading the No. 30 Gamecocks, 3-2, Belaya pulled off a three-set
triumph at the top spot over No. 59 nationally ranked Jaklin Alawi to clinch the Green and Gold's second
win over a national top-30 foe this season.
The CAA Player of the Week honor was
the second singles accolade in Belaya's career after she earned the honor last
season following a three-set win over the No. 30-ranked player in the country
from Texas. Last week, Belaya and doubles partner
Jeltje Loomans, who are
ranked No. 4 nationally, were named the CAA Doubles Team of the Week for the
first time in 2013 and the sixth time overall.
Belaya and the Tribe return to action
when they close out a four-match homestand with a Saturday doubleheader on Feb.
23. The Green and Gold hosts Ivy League foe Penn at 10 a.m., before welcoming
CAA counterpart James Madison to the McCormack-Nagelsen Tennis Center at 4 p.m. Live stats for both matches will be available at
