WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - The William and Mary women's tennis team swept the Colonial
Athletic Association weekly award, the league office announced on Tuesday.
Freshman
Leeza Nemchinov was named the league player of the week, while her and
junior
Sydney Smith were also honored as the doubles team of the week. It
marked the sixth and seventh weekly CAA honors for the Tribe this season.
Nemchinov was named the player of the week after clinching the
Tribe's 5-2 win over Wake Forest on Sunday. It marked the third time this
season that Nemchinov clinched a W&M victory. The Tribe rookie dropped the
opening set in a tiebreaker, 7-6, to the Demon Deacon's Xue Zhang at the No. 3
spot, before winning the next two sets, 6-0, 6-4, to record her seventh straight
victory. Nemchinov improved to 17-9 overall and a team-best 11-2 in dual-match
play.
Smith and Nemchinov garnered the CAA doubles honor after clinching the
doubles point against Wake Forest. The Tribe duo cruised past Brigita Bercyte
and Karen Forman, 8-1, at the No. 3 slot for its third straight victory. The
tandem is a perfect 3-0 in dual matches on the year. It marks the second
straight week in which the Tribe took home the doubles team of the week honor
as juniors
Maria Belaya and
Jeltje Loomans received the distinction for the
second time on Feb. 27.
Winners of seven straight, the Tribe will have
nearly two week off, before returning to action with a road trip to the
Washington, D.C., area. W&M, which is 11-2 on the year, meets BIG EAST foe
Georgetown on Saturday, March 16, before trekking to Maryland on Sunday, March
17. Both matches carry a noon start time.
