20 Questions Feature
Sam will be serving as an elected captain this season. He is also our academic leader who ensures that the gymnastics team’s scholar-athlete tradition remains alive and well as evidenced by last year’s second place finish on the heels of the Tribe’s 2012 national academic team title for men’s gymnastics…Sam is a multiple first team Academic All-American Scholar-Athlete and Provost Award honoree…He is in the running for Phi Beta Kappa distinction at the very university that started PBK through Thomas Jefferson’s efforts in the 1700’s…Sam has also earned the prestigious Ludwell Johnson and Archibald Finifter Scholarships for his scholastic efforts and research involvement in the field of economics…Sam’s fourth place finish on his favorite event, the parallel bars, was good enough to earn All-ECAC honors and qualify him for competition at the NCAA Championships. He is on the mend after two out of the gym shoulder separations and is positioning himself for national prominence during the championship portion of our season with his powerful and dynamic swing especially on his peach combinations…In addition to ranking tenth in our all-time parallel bars records, Sam has also qualified to compete in the NCAA Championships on the high bar…He was coached by Dick Kaziny at Wilmette Gymnastics…In the gym, Sam not only has a natural sense for and unique ability to analyze gymnastics but also a true talent for communicating this to his teammates which results in everybody making good progress when he is around… He has dual citizenship as he lived in England until age nine with his parents Bill and Katrine Patterson.
Competed on rings, parallel bars and high bar … Placed tied for 22nd on parallel bars at the NCAA Championships … Matched his career high in the event (14.7) at the national meet … Posted a career-best 14.3 on rings twice, coming in the home meet against Navy and the following weekend against Temple and Army … Earned the W&M Provost's Award ...
