William and Mary senior
Lindsey Moller
(Longmont, Colo.)
was named the winner of the Dean Ehlers Leadership Award Wednesday night by the Colonial Athletic Association, leading four Tribe players to all-conference honors on the eve of the Virginia 529 College Savings Plan CAA Championships. Moller, who also earned honorable-mention all-academic accolades, was joined in the lists by junior
Taysha Pye
(Bronx, N.Y.)
, sophomore
Jaclyn McKenna
(Huntington, N.Y.)
, and freshman
Kaitlyn Mathieu
(Waterboro, Maine)
.
Moller is the second Tribe player to win the Dean Ehlers award, joining
Kyra Kaylor '07
who won in 2008. The distinction, which has been presented to the deserving men's and women's basketball player since 1995, is named after former James Madison athletic director Dean Ehlers, who was a founding member of the conference, served as its first President, and was a recognized leader through his membership on numerous NCAA Committees. The award is given to the student-athlete who "embodies the highest standards of leadership, integrity and sportsmanship in conjunction with his academic athletic achievement." Off the court, Moller was very active in the Williamsburg community and small-group leader with the Williamsburg Community Chapel for sophomore girls, while also keeping her grades as a marketing major high enough to earn all-academic honors for the second time. On the court, Moller set career-highs this season for rebounds, rebounds per game, assists, steals, and five other statistical categories. In her final home game, Moller scored a season-high seven points while shooting 3-3 from the floor against Hofstra one week ago.
Pye was voted to the All-CAA third-team after averaging a career-best 16.8 ppg this season. She scored in double-digits in 14 straight games at one point, the third-longest streak in school history, and reached the 1,000-point plateau against Northeastern in early January. Pye was the third-fastest all-time at W&M to reach 1,000 points, doing so in her 74th career game. She is the first player at the College to average 16.4 ppg or greater in two seasons since
Lynn Norenberg '81
, and fifth overall.
Mathieu became the fifth Tribe player in the past six years to be named to the all-rookie team, after she led all freshmen in the league in field goal percentage, rebounds, and blocks in the regular season. Named CAA Rookie of the Week twice this season, Mathieu was also the only freshman named to the Cancun Thanksgiving Classic all-tournament team after averaging 19 ppg and 5.5 rpg in W&M's two games in Mexico. Through the regular season, Mathieu ranks eighth or better all-time among freshman in seven different categories, including sixth in field goals made, field goals attempted, three-pointers attempted, blocks, and blocks per game.
McKenna started every game for the Tribe this season at center, and averaged 5.9 ppg and 4.1 rpg to earn first-team all-academic honors. A chemistry major, McKenna is also active in the Student Environmental Action Coalition and looks to participate in biofuel research this summer. On the court, she led the team in field-goal percentage (44.2%) and three-point percentage (38.5%), and scored a career-high 24 points at VCU on February 27th.
William and Mary opens the CAA Tournament Thursday afternoon, taking on Hofstra at 2:30 p.m.
