W&M Women's Track and Field Competes Saturday at Mason Invitational

The William and Mary women's track and field team competed Saturday at the Mason Spring Invitational, collecting several personal-best performances and one all-time top-10 showing.

Triple Jump
In the triple jump, senior Alyssa Gaeto (Brentwood, Tenn.) had a personal-best leap, skip, and jump of 11.12 meters (36-5.75) to tie Jessica Unger '98 for eighth all-time in school history.

Long Jump
Gaeto also competed in the long jump, taking ninth on the day with a leap of 5.17m (16-11.5).

100m Hurdles
In the 100m hurdles, senior Katie Guevel (Burlington, Va.) was sixth in the finals with a time of 14.90 seconds, and freshman Kiah Zaremba (Fredericksburg, Va.) was 10th in the finals.  Guevel ran 14.72 earlier in the day under more favourable wind conditions, the fourth-best time in the prelims.

Javelin
In the javelin throw, two of the team's freshmen continued to progress by leaps and bounds.  Anna Rose Gellert (Providence, N.J.) took sixth with a throw of 30.62m (100-5), about four inches beyond her previous best this season.  Kayla Trantham (Poquoson, Va.) improved her career-best by more than five feet, throwing 28.43m (93-3) to take eighth place.

5,000m Run
Junior Sara Lasker (Fredericksburg, Va.) cut nearly 21 seconds off of her best 5,000m time to take seventh in that event on Saturday, crossing the line in 17:28.77.  Senior Kelsey Budd (Oakton, Va.) was ninth, running 17:41.26.  Both women are already ECAC qualifiers this season at 10,000m.

Hammer Throw and Shot Put
Freshman Erin Challis (Toano, Va.) had two personal-best efforts on the day, the first in the hammer throw to take seventh.  She threw the hammer 36.57m (120-0) for the place, more than 12 and-a-half feet past her previous best in the event.  Later, in the shot put, she had a personal-best of just under four inches to take eighth with a put of 11.11m (36-5.5).

Pole Vault
In the pole vault, senior Emily Jeremiah (Mechanicsville, Va.) tied for eighth at 3.45m (11-3.75), and freshman Austyn Rapp (Midlothian, Texas) tied for 10th after clearing the bar at 3.30m (10-10).

William and Mary returns to action next weekend, with athletes competing at two meets.  The team's top athletes will head out to southern California to compete in the Mt. SAC Relays on Thursday and Friday, while the majority of the squad will be in Richmond on Saturday at the VCU Invitational.
