Williamsburg, Va. - The William and Mary women's tennis team was well
represented in the final Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) National and
Regional rankings released by the organization on Thursday. As a team, the
reigning Colonial Athletic Association Champions capped the season ranked No.
44 nationally and No. 4 in the ITA Atlantic Region. Along with being regarded
as one of the top doubles teams in the country, the W&M team of sophomore
Anik Cepeda and freshman Hope Johnson earned a regional doubles ranking, while
freshman Jeltje Loomans and sophomore Marlen Mesgarzadeh were ranked in the regional
top 20 in singles.
Cepeda and Johnson, who earned a spot in the NCAA Doubles
Championship in May, finished the season ranked No. 45 nationally along with garnering the No. 5 spot in the Atlantic Region. The Green
and Gold twosome was ranked as high as No. 30 nationally earlier in the season
and amassed 12 wins, while knocking off five nationally ranked opponents. The
pair also earned First-Team All-CAA honors in doubles action.
Fresh off competing in the NCAA Singles Championships,
Loomans was ranked No. 15 in the ITA Atlantic Region. The W&M rookie
finished the season with 12 singles wins, including an impressive 10-5
dual-match ledger with seven triumphs coming at the No. 3 position. She earned
Third-Team All-CAA honors in singles action and became the sixth W&M
freshman to earn a spot in the NCAA Singles Championships.
A two-time First-Team All-CAA singles player, Mesgarzadeh
also earned a spot in the regional singles rankings at No. 20. The Green and
Gold sophomore finished the season on a tear, winning 10 of her final 11
matches on the way to posting a 13-9 singles mark. After battling injuries
through the fall and early spring season, Mesgarzadeh posted an outstanding 8-1 ledger at
the No. 2 singles post.
The Tribe capped the 2011 season with a representative at
each of the three NCAA Championship events for the 15th time in
school history. As a team, W&M made its 18th NCAA Tournament
appearance after claiming the program's 21st CAA Championship.
Loomans represented the Green and Gold at the NCAA Singles Championships, while
Cepeda and Johnson competed in the NCAA Doubles Championships. Prior to its
setback in the NCAA Tournament against No. 30-ranked Yale, the College won nine
of 10 matches, including seven straight on the way to winning the league crown
and finishing with a 16-9 record. The Tribe will return an experienced lineup for the
2011-12 season that features five returning All-CAA competitors after only
graduating fifth-year senior and ITA Atlantic Region Cissie/Leary
Award for Sportsmanship winner Lauren Sabacinski.
