WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - After
finishing the 2010 campaign ranked No. 9 in the country, the William and Mary
Tribe men's soccer team enters the 2011 season ranked No. 13 in the country in
the NSCAA Preseason Coaches poll released on Tuesday. In the College Soccer News preseason poll,
the Tribe is receiving votes.
"It is certainly
nice to be recognized," Tribe head coach Chris Norris said. "It reflects
the outstanding season we had last fall and the direction of the program over
the past few years. Of course, we have not had a training session yet, so
to be talking about where we fit in the national picture is quite
premature. On Thursday, we will start the process of trying to become the
best team we can be. If that process goes well, hopefully we can be in
the discussion of top teams when the final 2011 poll is published."
The 2010 season was a terrific one for the College, as the
Tribe won its seventh CAA title in program history and made its eighth
appearance in the NCAA Tournament Round of 16.
The Tribe's 15 wins were the most since the 2002 season, while its eight
CAA conference wins were the most since 1996.
Despite losing 10 players to graduation from the 2010 team,
the Tribe has reloaded with a top-40, nationally recognized recruiting
class. Headlining the Tribe's returnees
will be senior Nicolas Abrigo and redshirt-junior Ben Anderson. Abrigo, the 2010 CAA Tournament Most Outstanding
Player, is the top-returning goal scorer for the College, while Anderson broke
out a year ago, earning All-CAA Third-Team honors.
The William and Mary Tribe men's soccer team will get the
regular season underway with a highly anticipated rematch from last year's NCAA
Tournament. The No. 13-ranked Tribe will
travel to Dallas, Texas to face the No. 5-ranked SMU Mustangs on August 27 at 8
p.m. EST.
