BLACKSBURG, Va. - The
No. 13-ranked William and Mary Tribe men's soccer team came away with a 0-0
draw in its final exhibition match of the season on Saturday night against the
Virginia Tech Hokies. The Tribe will
travel to No. 5-ranked SMU on Saturday, August 27 to begin the 2011 season.
The Tribe controlled possession for the bulk of the match,
out-shooting the Hokies, 13-10. The
College also had a distinct advantage in shots on goal as well, getting eight
attempts on frame while Virginia Tech was able to get only two.
Leading the way for the Green and Gold's offense was
freshman Josh West, who took a team-high four shots, getting three on
goal. Off the bench, classmate Andrew Kestler also got off two shots during the scoreless draw.
The story of the match was the play of a duo of Tribe
goalkeepers who combined for the shutout.
Senior Colin Smolinsky got the start, making two saves in just over 74
minutes of work. Fershman Bennett Jones
came off the bench and completed the shutout.
The No. 13-ranked William and Mary Tribe men's soccer team
will head to Dallas, Texas to play the No. 5-ranked SMU Mustangs in a rematch
of last season's NCAA Tournament third round game. Saturday's match is scheduled for an 8 p.m.
EST start.
