The William and Mary women's swimming team held steady at fourth after Friday night's finals session at the Terrapin Cup Invitational, amassing 365.5 points heading into the final day. Maryland continues to lead the event at 956 points, well ahead of Towson (402), North Carolina State (378), W&M, and the other three teams in attendance.
200 Medley Relay
In the 200 medley relay, the team of Molly Emery (Burke, Va.), Liz Collins (Alexandria, Va.), Gabrielle Mizerak (Manassas, Va.), and Sara Shaner (Clarendon Hills, Ill.) touched the wall in 1:44.56, good for third place and the sixth-fastest time in school history. Fifth place in the race went to the team of Sammie Cooper (Mt. Kisco, N.Y.), Liza McDevitt (Jenkintown, Pa.), Hailey Hewitt (Fairfax, Va.), and Kristin Fimian (Oakton, Va.), who teamed together to finish in 1:46.03. That time was the eighth-fastest ever at W&M.
400 IM
In the 400 IM, freshman Rebecca Spicher (Chesapeake, Va.) finished eighth overall in 4:30.93 and classmate Brodde Lamb (Charlottesville, Va.) was second in her heat (10th overall) in 4:27.81. Senior Laura Matthews (Drexel Hill, Pa.) was 13th overall in 4:30.01, and freshman Emma Carpenter (Haddonfield, N.J.) was 16th in 4:35.86.
100 Fly
In the 100 fly, Gabrielle Mizerak won the "B" Final with a season-best time of 56.37 seconds, finishing two spots ahead of Sammie Cooper's 57.09 showing. Hailey Hewitt was 12th overall in 57.12 seconds, and Kristin Fimian rounded out the quartet with her 15th-place 57.68.
200 Free
Senior Molly Emery (Burke, Va.) took fifth in the 200 free timing 1:51.12 to tie for the best finish of the night for W&M. Jen Bentley (Jamestown, N.Y.) swam 1:52.54 for 10th overall, and Caylyn Tate (Sterling, Va.) was 18th with a time of 1:53.40. Rounding out the efforts in the event, junior Kayla O'Malley (Vienna, Va.) was 22nd in 1:54.25, and Sara Shaner was 24th in 1:55.67.
100 Breast
After breaking the freshman record in the 100 breast this morning, Liz Collins lowered her own standard even more in the evening, timing 1:04.53 to finish fifth in the overall race. Collins also solidified her hold on the sixth-slot in the Tribe's all-time record book. Liza McDevitt was sixth overall today with her 1:04.57, and Emily Bart (Cherry Hill, N.J.) finishing 10th in 1:06.03.
100 Back
Molly Emery was just off of record-pace again in the 100 back, timing 55.81 to finish seventh in the "A" Final. Laura Matthews swam a lifetime-best 56.91 seconds, and Sammie Cooper continued to drop lifetime-best swims with her 56.58 time for 18th overall. Cooper now ranks fourth in school history in the even. Liz Glenn (57.47) and Hailey Hewitt (57.86) finished out the team's effort in the evet.
800 Free Relay
The final race of the night was the 800 free relay, where W&M once again had two of the best performances in school history. The "A" relay saw Rebecca Spicher lead off Gabrielle Mizerak, Katie Thomas (Virginia Beach, Va.), and Sara Shaner to a fifth-place effort, while Jen Bentley, Caylyn Tate, Molly Emery, and Kayla O'Malley took seventh overall. Spicher's relay turned in a time of 7:33.49, the ninth-fastest time in school history, while Bentley's quartet ranks 10th all-time at W&M with a time of 7:35.91.
