WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - After
winning the program's 10th CAA title and earning a bid to the NCAA Tournament,
William and Mary Tribe head women's soccer coach John Daly and five players
were honored by the Virginia Association of Sports Information Directors
(VaSID) with All-State accolades on Friday.
Daly was named the Coach of the Year, while junior All-American
Mallory Schaffer was named VaSID State Player of the Year. Joining Schaffer on the all-state first-team
were senior Diana Weigel and freshman Emory Camper, while junior Cortlyn Bristol and sophomore Dani Rutter earned second-team all-state honors.
The 2011 campaign was a terrific one for both Daly and the
Tribe, as the College posted a 17-3-2 record on the year on its way to winning
the conference championship. Daly, who
has now won VaSID State Coach of the Year honors five times during his
illustrious career, also was named the 2011 NSCAA/Mondo Mid-Atlantic
Region Coach of the Year and CAA Coach of the Year. During his 25 years at the helm of the Tribe
women's soccer program, Daly has become one of the finest coaches in the
nation. Never having suffered a losing season under his watch, Daly's
all-time career coaching record stands at an impressive 347-140-41 (.696).
The VaSID State Player of the Year
honor is just the latest accolade to be given to Schaffer following a
tremendous 2011 campaign. Earlier this
month, Schaffer became the 14th player to be named an All-American in school
history, earning first-team honors from the NSCAA. The Allison Park, Pennsylvania native was
also named Second-Team Soccer America MVP,
First-Team All-Region, CAA Player of the Year, First-Team All-CAA, and a
Hermann Trophy semifinalist. Schaffer led the CAA in goals with 17 and
points with 40. Her six assists on the year ranked in a tie for seventh,
while her six game-winning goals were the most in the conference. With her state player of the year honor,
Schaffer is just the second player in program history to earn the distinction,
joining Claire Zimmeck who earned the honor in 2006.
Earning first-team all-state honors for
the second time in her career was Weigel, who helped lead a stout Tribe defense
this season. This year, Weigel was the
leader of a Tribe defense that allowed just 17 goals and recorded a CAA-best 11
shutouts. Weigel, a Fairfax, Virginia product, also contributed on the
offensive end this season, scoring three goals and dishing out five
assists. For her career, Weigel totaled eight goals and 17 assists, earning
First-Team All-CAA honors three times and All-Region accolades twice, including
first-team honors this season.
An immediate contributor this season
for W&M, Camper was named VaSID First-Team All-State after earning CAA
All-Rookie honors as well. Camper, a Virginia
Beach, Virginia native, led all CAA freshmen with 21 points, seven goals, and
seven assists. Overall, Camper tied for fifth in the CAA in assists and
tied for 11th in points. Camper came out on fire, scoring a point in her
first five collegiate matches. Her best game came against No. 13
Georgetown, when the rookie scored a pair of goals, including the match winner.
Earning VaSID Second-Team All-State
mention this season was Bristol, who was also named First-Team All-Region and
First-Team All-CAA. Teaming up with
Schaffer this season, Bristol gave the College one of the most potent offensive
midfields in the country. Bristol
totaled 23 points on seven goals and nine assists in 2011. The Chantilly,
Virginia native ranked eighth in the CAA in points, while her nine assists tied
her for second in the league.
Joining Bristol on the all-state
second-team was Rutter, who had a breakout 2011 campaign. Rutter totaled 25 points on the season,
leading the CAA and ranking 17th in the country in assists with 11. The York, Pennsylvania native also netted
seven goals, including two game-winners.
Rutter came up big in tournaments this season, earning CAA, Tribe
Invitational, and VCU Invitational All-Tournament honors over the course of the
year.
