Columbia, Mo. - The William and Mary men's basketball team dropped a road
contest at No. 10/8 Missouri, 94-56, on Sunday afternoon at Mizzou Arena. The
Tribe fell to 2-9 on the year, while the Tigers remained undefeated at 11-0.
Sophomore forward
Tim Rusthoven led the Tribe with 14
points, four rebounds and three assists. The Winfield, Ill., native was 4-of-8
from the floor and 6-of-7 from the charity strip against Mizzou. Sophomore
guard
Matt Rum and freshman
Marcus Thornton each finished with 10 points for
the Green and Gold. Rum knocked down a pair of 3-pointers and equaled Rusthoven
with a team-best four rebounds.
Defense was the name of the game early as neither team could
find its rhythm offensively. The Tribe limited Mizzou, which entered the game
ranked No. 4 nationally in points per game, to just 2-of-8 from the field in the opening
six minutes of the contest, but could not capitalize on the offensive end. The
Tigers scored the opening 19 points of the game to seize control.
After Missouri led 44-18 at the half, W&M used a strong start to the second
half to cut into the margin. With the Mizzou lead reaching 54-26, the Green
and Gold closed to 18 with a 12-2 spurt. Rusthoven and sophomore
Brandon Britt
scored back-to-back buckets for the College. After a Tiger jumper, the College
scored eight straight points to close the gap to 56-38, forcing a Missouri
timeout.
Senior forward
Quinn McDowell knocked down a 3-pointer from
the right corner, before Thornton drilled a free throw line jumper in
transition. McDowell capped the run with a triple from the top of the key off
an assist from senior
Kendrix Brown to cut the deficit to 18 with 14:44
remaining in the game. In total, the Tribe scored 20 points in the opening 5:16 of the second half to close the gap. Out of the timeout, though, Missouri scored seven straight
points and W&M could get no closer than 22 the rest of the way.
Missouri shot 60.3 percent (35-of-58) from the
field for the game and connected on 17-of-20 from the charity stripe. The Tigers also turned
in an impressive 18 assists compared to just six turnovers. W&M finished
the contest shooting 35.8 percent (19-of-53) from the floor, including a 45.2
percent (14-of-31) clip in the second half.
Junior Michael Dixon led all scorers with 30 points on
13-of-19 form the floor for Missouri. Kim English tallied 17 points, while
Ricardo Ratliffe and Matt Pressey each poured in 11 points. For W&M, Brown was a perfect
3-of-3 from the floor for seven points, while Britt also tallied seven points
for the Green and Gold.
W&M will play its final game before the Christmas
holiday when it hosts Iona on Wednesday, Dec. 21, in the rematch of the team's
2010 BracketBusters affair played in New Rochelle, N.Y. Tip-off is slated for 7
p.m. at Kaplan Arena. Fans can catch the action over the Tribe Radio Network
with Jay Colley, Bill McDonald and Charlie Woollum on the call. The Tide 92.3
FM in Williamsburg is the flagship station of the Tribe Radio Network and the
