WILLIAMSBURG, Md. (Jan. 29, 2012) - The William and Mary men's
gymnastics team earned the State Open collegiate division team title at Kaplan
Arena on Sunday afternoon.
W&M improved upon its
season-opening score at the Navy Open last weekend and recorded a 316.5, while
James Madison's club team posted a 175.0.
Sophomore Daniel Potemski led the
Tribe individually by claiming four event titles and posting the top all-around
score.
The Tribe opened the meet on
floor and recorded a season-high 51.1. Junior Matt Burns won the event title
with a 13.5, while Potemski registered a 12.8.
Potemski earned the pommel horse
title with a 13.8, while senior Steve Deutsch recorded a 12.8 to help
contribute to W&M's team score of 51.8.
Potemski set a career high on
rings for the second consecutive weekend and earned a 14.2 in the event. The
score ranks ninth on W&M's top performances list. Sophomore Sam Patterson
and senior Jonathan Prohov also contributed to the Tribe's 53.9 with a 13.4 and
a 13.2, respectively.
W&M tallied a season-best
56.2 on vault and was led by Potemski's 14.7, which was the top individual
score in the event. Freshman Michael Deitz and senior Dan Melzar tied for
second with a pair of 14.1's.
Potemski claimed his fourth
individual title of the afternoon on parallel bars with a 13.6, while sophomore
Landon Funiciello placed second with a 13.3. As a team, the College posted a
52.2 in the event.
Junior Kris Yeager earned the top
score on high bar with a 13.1 and helped the Tribe record a season-best 51.3 in
the event.
Potemski won the all-around title
with a season-high 81.8, while junior Futa Ikeda placed second with a 74.6.
W&M will compete on the road
for the entire month of February before returning to Kaplan Arena on March 4
when it hosts Navy.
