HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. - The William and Mary Tribe women's basketball team dropped a
hard-fought league contest to Hofstra, 82-75, on Thursday evening inside the
Mack Sports Complex. For the year,
William and Mary falls to 9-12 overall and 2-8 in CAA play, while Hofstra
improves to 16-5 on the season and 8-2 in league action.
On a night where scoring was abundant, W&M placed five
players in double-digit scoring totals.
Leading the charge was junior center Jaclyn McKenna who poured in a
team-high 16 points on 5-of-10 shooting from the floor. Junior forward Emily Correal notched her 10th
double-double of the season, scoring 14 points and pulling down 12
rebounds. Senior guards Katherine DeHenzel
and Taysha Pye netted 12 points each.
True freshman Kyla Kerstetter tallied a career-high 12 points on 5-of-6 shooting
from the field.
Hofstra opened the contest charging out on an 11-2 run. Answering back, the College reeled off a run
of its own. A McKenna lay-up with 12:16
remaining capped off a 9-2 Tribe run, and cut the Pride lead to, 13-11. After trading baskets for the next five
minutes, W&M took its first lead of the game when Correal laid it in off the
glass, giving the Tribe a 22-21 advantage.
For the remainder of the half, William and Mary held court. Aldridge's drive and pull-up jumper from the
elbow with 50 seconds left pushed W&M's margin to 36-31. Hofstra added a bucket as the half closed, but
the Green and Gold owned a 36-33 lead at intermission.
In her return home, McKenna paced the College in the
first-half, tallying 10 points, and three rebounds while going a perfect 4-of-4
from the foul line. DeHenzel also got
in to the mix by pouring in nine.
Rounding out the first half effort was Correal, who notched four points
and six boards.
As the second frame got underway, Hofstra regained the lead
at the 16:39 mark, on a made jumper by Marie Malone. With 10:23 remaining, Hofstra owned a 60-49
lead. The Green and Gold responded with
an 8-2 run. True freshman Jazmen Boone
and Kerstetter sparked the run, combining to score four points.
Not allowing the Pride to pull away, the College got to
within six after a Correal lay-up cut the gap to 76-70, with just under five
minutes left to play. However, Hofstra
scored the next five points to secure the 82-75, victory.
For the game, W&M shot 45.3 (29-of-64) percent from the
field and 66.7 percent (14-of-21) from that charity stripe. The College hit the boards hard, ripping down
41. As a team, the Green and Gold dished
out 16 assists, led individually by junior Janine Aldridge's five.
Shante Evans led the Hofstra effort with 19 points and 10
rebounds. Guard Candice Bellocchio chipped
in 14 points and 11 assists. The Pride
finished the game shooting 41.8 percent (33-of-79) from the floor.
The College concludes its three-game road stand Sunday, Feb.
5, as it travels to Wilmington, N.C., for a CAA tilt with the UNCW
Seahawks. Tip-off from Trask Coliseum is
