WILLIAMSBURG, Va.
- The William and Mary women's soccer team held its annual banquet and awards
ceremony Saturday evening. Coming off of
an impressive 2011 season, which included a CAA Championship and a NCAA tournament
showing, the College honored 11 players for their performances on and off of
the field.
After recording a banner year, junior midfielder Mallory Schaffer took home MVP honors. The Allison
Pa., native had one of the best seasons in the College's history. Accolades earned by Schaffer this season
included: First-Team NSCAA All-American, Soccer America MVPs
Second-Team, CAA Player of the Year, VaSID State Player
of the Year, First-Team All-Region, First-Team All-CAA and CAA Women's Soccer
Scholar-Athlete of the Year. For the
year, Schaffer accounted for 17 goals and 40 points. Her 17 goals and 40 points led the CAA, the
40 points netted by Schaffer tied for 10th most all-time in school
history. Nationally, Schaffer finished
the year ranking 11th in goals scored and 16th in total points.
The freshman trio of back Emily Fredrikson, midfielder Aly
Shaughnessy and forward Emory Camper all shared Rookie of the Year Honors. Fredrikson's first fall at the College
produced Second-Team All-CAA Honors and a spot on the CAA All-Rookie Team. Shaughnessy's greenhorn campaign culminated
in a spot on the CAA All-Tournament Team, the McLean, Va., native started
19-of-22 matches. Camper's first season
produced 21 points, seven goals and seven assists. Top Drawer Soccer ranked Camper as the nation's
28th best freshman, by seasons end Camper's named could be found on the First-Team
VaSID All-State Team and the CAA All-Rookie Team.
Sharing the Most Improved Award was
sophomore back Tara Connors and sophomore midfielder/forward Dani Rutter. Connor's performance in the CAA tournament
was outstanding, and resulted in her being named the CAA Tournament Most
Outstanding Player. After appearing in
just 12 matches her freshmen season, Rutter started all 22 matches during her
sophomore campaign and earned a spot on the CAA All Tournament Team. The New York native also took home the Assist
Award, tallying a team-high 11.
Defensively, junior goalkeeper
Katherine Yount and senior midfielder Diana Weigel shared MVP honors. Yount
led the CAA with 10 shutouts this season, and currently ranks fourth all-time
in school history with a .86 career goals against average. Weigel garnered First-Team All-Region honors and First-Team All-CAA honors this past season. Earning the Coach's Award was junior forward
Cortlyn Bristol, junior midfielder/back Carson Scott and junior midfielder
Katrina Smedley. Bristol started all 22
matches this season and earned First-Team All-CAA accolades. Hailing from Birmingham Al., Scott appeared
in five matches for the Tribe during the 2011 season. A native of Hamilton N.J., Smedley saw action
in 11 matches for the College this year.
Academically, there were two awards
presented to three players. Scott and
sophomore back Samantha Trail shared the Academic Award. Brining home the Highest Freshman G.P.A. honor
was back Christina Popps. Popps appeared
in 14 matches this year and earned a start against Appalachian State.
