The William and Mary men's golf team got its spring season underway Monday at the Wexford Plantation Intercollegiate, shooting two rounds on the 6,913-yard course in Florence, South Carolina.  CAA-foe Georgia State leads the team standings after the first day at 591 (+15), ahead of Davidson (+22) and Furman (+25), while the Tribe is 11th in the field of 17 at +44 (308-312).  Individually, Damon Stephenson from Georgia State is the only player in the clubhouse under par, at 143 (-1).

The Tribe's effort on the day was led by junior Jeremy Wells (Hopewell, Va.), who shot 74 in the morning before coming back with a 79 in the afternoon to stand tied for 30th at 153 (+9).  Wells is only six shots out of the top five.  One stroke back is the sophomore duo of Michael Bekken (Blacksburg, Va.) and Patrick Leisure (Charlottesville, Va.), who had identical scorecards of 76 and 78 on Monday to head into the clubhouse tied for 35th at 154 (+10).  Sophomore Nick Schafer (Arlington, Va.) paired rounds of 82-80 to stand tied for 74th, and sophomore Will Smith (Avon, Conn.), playing in his first collegiate event, dropped 10 strokes between rounds to shoot 77 in the afternoon and improve to a tie for 82nd.

The intercollegiate concludes Tuesday with one round in the morning.
