Tribe Rolls to 5-2 Win over Syracuse

Syracuse, N.Y. - For the second time in as many Fridays, the No. 59 ranked William and Mary women's tennis team downed a BIG EAST foe, this time recording a 5-2 road win at Syracuse. The Green and Gold claimed the doubles point for the fourth straight match and then tallied singles wins at the top four posts to secure the win. The College, which improved to 2-6 on the year, handed Syracuse its first home loss in more than a year as the Orange fell to 7-4 on the season.

The sophomore pair of Maria Belaya and Jeltje Loomans continued their winning ways at the top doubles post, routing Emily Harman and Breanna Bachini, 8-2. The two-time reigning CAA Doubles Team of the Week won its sixth straight in improving to 13-5 on the year. Playing together for the first time in the dual-match season, senior Katie Kargl and junior Nina Vulovich clinched the initial point of the match with an 8-2 triumph over Jimena Wu and Komal Safdar at the No. 3 position. Kargl and Vulovich improved to 3-1 on the year. Junior Anik Cepeda and sophomore Hope Johnson rounded out the Tribe sweep, winning for the third time in their last four matches at the No. 2 position with an 8-6 win over Aleah Marrow and Maddie Kobelt.

Belaya staked the College to a 2-0 lead with a straight sets win at the No. 2 singles slot. She won for the fourth time in her last six matches, rolling to a 6-3, 6-1 win over Maddie Kobelt. Belaya improved to 4-3 in dual-match competition with her fifth win overall. Cepeda tallied the Tribe's third team point of the match with a straight-sets win at the No. 4 slot. She downed Komal Safdar, 6-1, 6-2, for her third singles win of the season.

At the top singles position, Loomans knocked off her second ranked opponent in as many weeks with a straight sets triumph to clinch the Tribe victory. The Green and Gold sophomore tallied a 6-4, 6-2 win over No. 93-ranked Emily Harman for her fifth win of the season. Johnson rounded out the Tribe win with a victory at the No. 3 position. She recorded her third triumph of the season, downing Breanna Bachini, 6-4, 6-3.

The Tribe will close out its trip to Syracuse, N.Y., when it looks to avenge its 2011 NCAA first round setback to Yale on Saturday, Feb. 25. The match with the No. 25 Bulldogs is slated for 11 a.m., at the Drumlins Tennis Club.
