Tribe Baseball Downs Bears 19-2 on Saturday

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - The William and Mary baseball team defeated NYIT 19-2 Saturday afternoon in game three of its four-game set from Plumeri Park.  The win was the College's fourth straight, and improves its record to 6-5 on the season while NYIT falls to 0-3 overall.

Sophomore third baseman Ryan Lindemuth continued to impress with his strong play, going 2-for-4 with three runs batted in.  Freshman first baseman Michael Katz was 3-for-5 with an RBI, while classmate Josh Smith also tallied three hits to go along with two RBIs.  Junior center fielder Ryan Brown's impressive stat line included three runs, two hits, and an RBI.  In all, nine batters scored a run, eight drove in a run and seven recorded at least one hit in the impressive offensive outpouring.

On the mound, freshman Jason Inghram (1-2) notched his first collegiate victory in six innings of work, striking out five while allowing just one run and three hits.  Senior Garrison Sarrett along with juniors Brett Goodloe and John Farrell each saw an inning of relief work.  Combined, the trio only allowed one unearned run and limited the Bears to just two more hits.

The Tribe got on the scoreboard first with three runs in the bottom of the first inning.  Lindemuth provided the firepower in the opening batting series, blasting a triple into right that plated junior second baseman Kevin Nutter and Brown.  The second inning saw no let-up, with the College scoring five more.   With the bases loaded, senior catcher Chris Forsten advanced home after a wild pitch by the Bears' John Duggan to open the floodgates.  Three more Tribe batters crossed home plate, before sophomore Bobby Klein drove home the final run of the frame with a two-out RBI single to first.

NYIT's first run of the weekend came in the top of the third, when center fielder Robert Loftus drove home third baseman Joey LaCugna on a deep sacrifice fly to center field, making the score 8-1, William and Mary.  The visitors were plagued by multiple errors in the bottom of the inning that culminated in seven Tribe runs, and after three innings were in the books, W&M held a 15-1 lead.  Highlighting the offensive juggernaut was a triple smacked by Smith back to the wall in right-center that plated Katz.

After the Tribe tacked on two more runs in the bottom of the fifth, NYIT got on the scoreboard one more time with a run in the top half of the seventh.  NYIT plated an unearned run after T.R. Waskiewicz drove in catcher Nick Sebastian with a single to left field.

The Green and Gold closed out the scoring in the bottom of the eighth with two insurance runs.  Smith plated Lindemuth for the inning's first run with a double to right-center, before senior Sean Aiken drove home W&M's 19th run of the contest with a sacrifice fly to center field to bring in Katz.  In the ninth, Farrell sat down the Bears in order to seal the 19-2 victory.

The Tribe returns to action tomorrow as it hosts NYIT in the series finale from Plumeri Park, beginning at 1 p.m. Fans can follow the action online at TribeAthletics.com with live audio and stats.
