SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (March 11, 2012) - The William and Mary men's
gymnastics team earned its best score of the season but was edged by
Springfield, 332.7 - 331.8, on Sunday afternoon in Springfield, Mass.
In addition to posting its top
team score of the 2012 campaign, W&M also earned season highs on floor
(56.3), pommel horse (54.8) and vault (56.8).
Individually, sophomore Daniel Potemski won the all-around title with an 82.7, while freshman Michael Deitz
earned the meet's top score on high bar with a career-best 14.0.
Potemski and sophomore Landon Funiciello both earned a 14.4 on floor to tie for the team's top mark and
helped the Tribe earn a season-high 56.3 in the event. Freshman J.J. Jindra
also came up big with a career-best 14.0.
W&M also registered a season
high on pommel horse (54.8) and was led by freshman Jason Wang who placed
second overall with a career-best 14.1. The impressive mark ranks eighth in the
Tribe's record book. Senior Steve Deutsch and freshman Peter Ten Eyck also
contributed to the team total with a 13.9 and a 13.7, respectively.
Deutsch led the College on rings
and finished second among all competitors with a 13.9. Jindra earned a 13.7 and
senior Jonathan Prohov registered a season-high 13.6 en route to helping the
team record a 54.7.
The Tribe registered a season-high
56.8 on vault and was led by Potemski's 14.6. Deitz also came up big with a
career-best 14.4, and Dan Melzar nearly equaled his best mark of the season in
the event with a 14.0.
Junior Kris Yeager and junior
Futa Ikeda both earned season highs with a 13.9 and a 13.7, respectively, to
lead W&M on parallel bars. Ten Eyck also contributed to the team total of
54.5 with a 13.5.
Deitz claimed the individual
title on high bar with a career-best 14.0 en route to helping the squad
register a 54.7. Jindra and Potemski both recorded a 13.8 in the event, which
equaled a season high for Jindra.
In addition to Potemski, Jindra
and Ikeda both competed in all six events and earned a 78.0 and a 77.9,
respectively, as all-arounders.
The Tribe will close out its
regular-season slate this week with a pair of home meets. W&M will host
Army in a dual meet on Thursday at 7 p.m., before competing against Temple and
Army on Saturday at 7 p.m.
