WILLIAMSBURG, Va. (March 15, 2012) - The
15th-ranked William and Mary men's gymnastics team defeated No. 14 Army, 329.6 -
322.2, at Kaplan Arena on Thursday evening.
In addition to
earning its second-best team score of the season, W&M also recorded season
highs on pommel horse (56.1) and parallel bars (55.6).
Sophomore
Daniel Potemski tied for first on floor with a 13.9 en route to helping the Tribe
earn a 54.4 in the event. Freshman J.J. Jindra and sophomore Landon Funiciello
also came up big with a 13.7 and a 13.6, respectively.
In the second
rotation of the evening, W&M posted its best score of the season on pommel
horse with a 56.1. Freshman Jason Wang was the College's top scorer with a
career-high 14.2 - a mark that ranks tied for seventh in the program's record
book. Potemski and junior Futa Ikeda also contributed to the team total with a
pair of 14.0's. The mark equaled a career high for Ikeda.
Jindra and
senior Steve Deutsch tied for first among all competitors with a 14.0 on rings,
while Ikeda registered a career-best 13.7 to help W&M earn a 55.3 in the
event.
The College
then moved to vault and was led by Potemski's 14.3, which placed second.
Freshman Michael Deitz, the reigning Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference
(ECAC) Co-Rookie of the Week, recorded a 14.0, while Jindra and Dan Melzar both
posted a 13.9. The score matched Jindra's career high and helped the Tribe earn
a 56.1 in the event.
A trio of
Tribe gymnasts set or equaled career highs on parallel bars en route to helping
the squad tally its best score of the season in the event with a 55.6. Ikeda and
sophomore Sam Patterson tied for the top score with a 14.1, while Jindra posted
a 13.8.
W&M closed
the meet on high bar and was led by Jindra's 13.4 and Potemski's 13.1, as the two placed first and second, respectively, in the event. The
College earned a team score of 52.1.
Potemski won
the individual all-around title with an 82.5, while Jindra (81.8) and Ikeda
(79.9) both recorded season highs.
The Tribe will wrap up its
regular-season slate when it hosts Temple and Army for senior night on Saturday
at 7 p.m.
