After a tough outing Monday, the William and Mary men's golf team rebounded Tuesday to shoot 295 (+11) in the final round of the C&F Bank Intercollegiate and rise up the leaderboard to finish 11th out of 29 teams, at 895 overall (+43). Missouri just barely managed to hang-on against a late charge from UNC Greensboro and Old Dominion, claiming the team title by two strokes with a total of 870 (+18) against 872 (+20) for both the Spartans and the Monarchs. The Tigers' 54-hole total broke the tournament scoring record, as did the individual winning total from Winthrop's Kamito Hirai (211, -2).
Junior Jeremy Wells (Hopewell, Va.) tallied another top-20 finish in his outstanding career to date, finishing 19th after shooting a team-best 72 on Tuesday to finish at 220 (+7) overall. Freshman Charlie Kern (Seattle, Wash.) finished in a tie for 53rd at 226 (+13) after his final-round 76, and sophomore Patrick Leisure (Charlottesville, Va.) matched Wells with a 72 of his own to improve to a tie for 60th, 227 overall. Two strokes back was freshman Alex Hicks (Cape May Court House, N.J.), who finished the week with a round of 77 (+6), and sophomore Tanner Taddeo (Hendersonville, Tenn.) rounded out the scoring squad with a 75 (+4) on Tuesday.
Competing as an individual, sophomore Will Smith (Avon, Conn.) carded 74 in the final round to finish his week at 225 (+12), good for a tie at 43rd overall. Nick Schafer (Arlington, Va.) and Michael Bekken (Blacksburg, Va.) tied for 88th at 231 overall (+18), with Schafer shooting 76 and Bekken 75 today. Freshman Joey Shroyer (Victoria, Minn.) closed out the individuals in a tie for 97th, shooting 74 in the final round and totaling 232 for the week.
William and Mary has just under two weeks off, before returning to the links on Easter Weekend, April 7-8. The Tribe will head to State College, Pennsylvania, to take part in Penn State's Rutherford Intercollegiate.
