Williamsburg, Va. - For the fourth time in the last five
years, William and Mary head men's tennis coach Peter Daub has been selected to
coach some of the top tennis prospects in the country. Daub was named the
Mid-Atlantic Section coach for the USTA National Team Boys 18 Championships,
July 28-31, in Urbana, Ill.
The 2012 team event will feature teams comprised of players from each of the
USTA's 17 Sections. Each Section chooses players from its region to represent
the Section and compete for the right to be called the USTA's top Section.
Teams are entered into a Compass Draw and play a college dual match format for
each match consisting of three doubles matches and six singles matches. A
Section will earn one team point per singles match win and one point for
winning two of three doubles matches. The first team to four points wins the
match and advances to compete in the next round. In 2008 and 2009, Daub led the
Mid-Atlantic to a 3-1 ledgers at the USTA National Team Championships, formerly
USTA Junior Davis Cup. The USTA Sportsmanship Award for the event was also
presented to the Mid-Atlantic region in 2009.
Daub recently completed his 19th season at the College. The three-time CAA
Coach of the Year owns 491 career victories, including 280 with the Green and
Gold. In 2011-12, Jamie Whiteford became the first Tribe singles player to win
the ITA Atlantic Region Singles Championship and ascended as high as No. 34
nationally under Daub's direction. Whiteford was selected to the NCAA Singles
Championship, giving W&M a representative on eight occasions at the NCAA
Individual Championships over the last nine years.
