WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - After
exceptional seasons on the diamond this past spring, three Tribe baseball
players combined to garner four all-state honors as voted by the Virginia Sports
Information Directors (VaSID).
Former RHP Matt Davenport was named VaSID Co-Pitcher of the
Year and garnered first-team all-state distinctions. Freshman first baseman Michael Katz was also
selected to the first team, while junior second baseman Kevin Nutter earned
second-team accolades.
In 2012, Davenport capped off an impressive career as he was
named Colonial Athletic Association Pitcher of the Year. The Chesapeake, Va., native also earned CAA
first-team honors before being named to the All-East Region first-team. On June 6, Davenport was selected by the
Detroit Tigers in the 34th round of 2012 Major League Baseball draft. For the year, Davenport compiled an ERA of
1.73 to go along with a record of 7-5.
In his 109.1 innings of work, he tallied 90 strikeouts, while holding
the opposition bats to a .210 average.
Davenport earned the CAA Pitcher of the Week distinction twice, as he
thrived in victories over James Madison (March 16) and Hofstra (May 18). The former Nansemond-Suffolk Academy standout
finished his career ranked second all-time in the W&M record books with an
ERA of 3.26.
As a freshman, Katz made an immediate impact as he earned
Freshman All-America honors from multiple media outlets. The National Collegiate Baseball Writers'
Association (NCBWA) named Katz a Freshman All-American, while he was also
selected to the Louisville Slugger Freshman All-America Team, which was voted
on by Collegiate Baseball. Katz led W&M with 58 RBIs and 10 home
runs, while he ranked second in the CAA in RBIs and fifth in homers. On April 9, he was named the CAA Rookie of
the Week after he racked up eight RBIs, eight runs scored, seven hits and two
home runs. Against Richmond (April 10),
the Falls Church, Va., native totaled seven RBIs and three hits, which included
his second grand slam of the season.
A 2012 all-state second-team selection, Nutter enjoyed his
finest season in a Tribe uniform. For
the year, the Vienna, Va., native was one of only three players to start all 56
games for the College. At the leadoff
spot, Nutter posted an on-base percentage of .431, which was tied for 12th best
in the CAA. Nutter led W&M in CAA play with an average of .349. He finished the season with 67 hits, 45 runs
scored, 16 RBIs, and 11 stolen bases.
His finest moment of the 2012 season may have come during the Tribe's
tilt against Delaware (April 7), as he drove in three runs on two hits.
