William and Mary's Hailey Hewitt '12 competed in her first Olympic Trials Saturday morning, timing 2:20.43 in the 200m backstroke to place 143rd out of nearly 200 competitors.  Her swim was the last of six this week for the W&M swimming programs, and she is the second Tribe woman ever to swim at the U.S. Olympic Trials, joining Katie Radloff '10 who competed in 2008.

Hewitt had an outstanding senior season, including winning the 200-yard backstroke for her second conference title at the Colonial Athletic Association Championships.  She was also second in the 100-yard backstroke, and fifth in the 100-yard butterfly.  Hewitt swam a lifetime-best in all six of her races (prelims and finals) at the conference meet, and broke three school records including the 200 back twice.  In the final race of the week, she came off the final wall in third place and chased down both women ahead of her to win her second CAA title in 1:58.22.  Hewitt's four-year career also saw 63 dual-meet victories, tied for the fourth-most in school history.
