William and Mary's Betsy Birchall (Mountain Brook, Ala.) was named to the National Golf Coaches Association Scholar All-America Team this week, marking her second consecutive year on the nation's toughest all-academic team. Athletes must have a GPA over 3.5 and play in the majority of their team's tournaments to be named to the list.
Birchall, a neuroscience major and rising senior at the College, ranked second on the team in 2011-12 with a 78.26 average for 18 holes. She appeared in 19 of the team's 24 rounds, and shot a season-best 73 (+1) in the second round at Kiawah Island in February. Birchall's top finishes included of 13th at the Towson Invitational and 19th at the CAA Championships, totaling 414 victories and a .595 winning percentage.
This is Birchall's second year in a row on the NGCA Scholar All-America team. W&M's only other team member was Brielle Paolini '10, who was selected in 2007.
