WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - The
William and Mary women's soccer team was the coaches' preseason selection to repeat
as Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) Champions in 2012, the league announced
on Monday. W&M received 10
first-place votes as it looks to claim the College's 11th CAA Championship this
fall.
Last season, the Tribe defeated VCU in the CAA title match
and capped an impressive 17-3-2 campaign by making the program's 24th NCAA
Tournament appearance. The College capped off its NCAA-record 31st straight
winning season, and put together an impressive 10-1 CAA mark last season. This
fall, the Green and Gold returns nine starters from a year ago, which includes
reigning CAA Player of the Year Mallory Schaffer. In 2011, Schaffer led the league with 40
points and 17 goals en route to being named an All-American.
After starting fall camp last week, W&M will travel to
Raleigh, N.C., to face N.C. State in its lone exhibition match on Saturday,
Aug. 11, at 5 p.m. The Tribe kicks off the 2012 regular season on Friday, Aug.
17, when it hosts 2011 NCAA finalist Duke at Martin-Family Stadium at
Albert-Daly Field in a match-up of two nationally ranked teams. The contest from Williamsburg is scheduled to
get underway at 7 p.m.
