William and Mary captain Christine Johnson (Williamsburg, V.a) was named the field hockey co-Player of the Week on Tuesday by the Colonial Athletic Association, after tying a school record and leading W&M to a 2-0 start to the year last weekend. It is the first weekly award for Johnson, and the first Player of the Week for the Tribe since Kim Hedley '08 was honored on Oct. 15, 2007.
Johnson started both matches last weekend in North Carolina at her customary center-defender position, but had a large impact on both ends of the field as the College beat Davidson 5-1 and Appalachian State 7-2. It was against the Wildcats that she etched her name in the Tribe record books, scoring four goals (including the game-winner) to tie the school record for most goals in a single game. She is the seventh player to accomplish that feat, but the first since Katie Silverthorne '02 in 2001. Johnson also had a defensive save in the contest, and her eight total points is the most record in a single game since Saskia Bensdorp '98 scored a school-record nine during the 1995 season. Against Appalachian State, Johnson lead the defense to a stifling first half of play, holding the Mountaineers without a single shot or penalty corner.
William and Mary continues its season-opening road trip this weekend, traveling to face Longwood on Friday night and Liberty on Sunday afternoon.
