The William and Mary volleyball team bounced back in the win column Saturday morning, sweeping by Holy Cross 3-0 in the second match at the Holly Young Invitational.  The Tribe improved to 4-5 with the victory, while the Crusaders fell to 0-8.

Box Score

The Tribe's win was keyed in by pinpoint passing and a robust .302 attack percentage, made possible by outstanding play from the team's two setters.  Senior Molly Krull (Raleigh, N.C.) dished out 21 assists, and added in a well-rounded line of five digs, one block, and one service ace.  Sophomore Carolina Rivas (Orlando, Fla.) added 19 helpers during her rotations, and also provided three digs.

Three players were the main beneficiaries of the setters' efforts, combining for 27 of the Tribe's 44 kills against only one error, and hitting .473.  Redshirt-sophomore Paulette Grand Pre (Laguna Beach, Va.) led the team with 11 total points, scoring nine kills while hitting .500 and adding two service aces.  She also had a team-best 14 digs on the defensive side of the net.  Freshman middle Carolyn Albright (Raleigh, N.C.) matched Grand Pre with nine kills and no errors, hitting .562 in the process and helping on two blocks.  Senior Shaylin O'Connell (Leesburg, Va.) completed the trio with nine kills and a .381 attack, and also had two blocks alongside Albright.

W&M had two underclassmen also perform well at the net.  Sophomore Manon Murray (Greensboro, N.C.) was effective all around the floor with seven kills, eight digs, two blocks, and an ace.  Freshman Dessi Koleva (Torrance, Calif.) only had six kills, but also provided 12 digs and helped out on a pair of blocks as well.  Defensive specialists Devin Andrews-Lyssy (Santa Rosa, Calif.) and Celine Alasomuka (Centreville, Va.) rounded out the morning's notables with nine digs and eight digs, respectively.

The College cruised to an easy victory in the first set, starting and finishing on massive runs.  The Tribe took advantage of three service aces and multiple errors by the Crusaders to jump out to an early 10-2 lead, and then weathered a brief storm that cut the margin to five at 13-8.  O'Connell's first kill of the match and a service ace by Murray broke upon the floodgates once again, and W&M never looked back with a 12-1 run that set the final score at 25-9.  In the set, the Tribe had 12 kills and zero errors while hitting .400.

Where the first set had been a clinic in scoring on the run, the second set showcased the Tribe's ability to simply hold a small lead against all challenges.  After a service error by Holy Cross staked W&M to a 1-0 lead, the College never relinquished the advantage despite four tie scores and slowly built out to the 25-21 victory.  The Crusaders forced the final tie with three points to reach 16-16, but the Tribe responded with a 5-1 run to put the match out of reach and contented itself with trading the final eight points back and forth before Grand Pre's kill finished things off.

The third set proved to be the dogfight of the match, with the Green and Gold looking to finish the sweep and Holy Cross just as eager to force a continuation.  The set featured 16 ties and five lead changes as the team's traded three-point swings back and forth, and it looked like a fourth set was in the offing when the Crusaders scored a kill to stand at set point, 24-23.  The senior O'Connell refused to let that happen, however, responding with her ninth and final kill to tie the score at 24-all.  On the next point, Albright and Krull elevated against the Holy Cross attacker and stuffed an attempt right back in her face, and suddenly it was the Tribe with set point at 25-24.  The Crusaders called their final timeout, but Albright put and end to the match immediately afterwards by hammering home a pass from Krull.

William and Mary finishes out its weekend tonight at 7 p.m., when it takes on the host New Hampshire Wildcats.
