In its new previewing series, 'Touting the Tribe,' TribeAthletics.com gives fans a glance at William and Mary student-athletes to keep an eye on during the upcoming 2012-13 season. The Tribe athlete featured today today is senior harrier Alex McGrath of the Green and Gold cross country and track and field teams.

McGrath was already a CAA Champion (at 10,000m) entering 2011-12, but delivered a breakout campaign in all three seasons.  During the fall cross country season, he ran an easy sixth-place finish at the CAA Championships, and then was the top W&M finisher at the Southeast Region Championships, placing ninth to earn all-region honors.  During the indoor track season, he was named All-East in both the 3,000m and 5,000m at the IC4A Championships, finishing second in the latter.  Outdoors, he won his second conference title, this time at 5,000m, and qualified for the NCAA Championships at 10,000m for the second year in a row.  McGrath also earned All-Academic honors in both cross country and track and field from the USTFCCCA.

As he begins his fifth year at the front of the Tribe's pack, McGrath will be looking to add several more individual championships to his record and help W&M regain its spot at the NCAA Championships.  An international relations major from Marlborough, N.H., McGrath has run 8:10.41 for 3,000m, 14:07.65 for 5,000m, and 29:51.31 for 10,000m.

McGrath and the Tribe begin their 2012 title defense and run to the NCAA Championships on Saturday morning, Sept. 15, at the 54th Annual W&M Cross Country Invitational.  The men's 8K race begins out at Eastern State at 9:45 a.m.
