WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - The William and Mary women's soccer team returns to Martin Family Stadium at Albert-Daly Field on Sunday, Sept. 16, in a 2 p.m. showdown against Davidson. Fans can follow the action online at TribeAthletics.com with live video and stats.
Scouting the Tribe
Riding a five-game winning streak and having outscored its
opponents 11-0 over that stretch, the Tribe enters the weekend with a mark of 5-2. Last weekend, the College posted back-to-back
1-0 victories over Villanova and Seton Hall.
In the match at Villanova, senior Mallory Schaffer lifted the Tribe to
victory with a goal in the 80th minute.
Freshman Nicole Baxter propelled the College to the triumph over Seton
Hall, when the Pennington, N.J., native connected on the game-winner in the
37th minute. For the year, Schaffer
leads the Tribe with 11 points, coming on a team-high five goals and one
assist. Classmate Cortlyn Bristol has
registered two scores and a squad-leading four assists.
Scouting the Wildcats
Ninth-year head coach Greg Ashton
brings the Wildcats to Martin Family Stadium at Albert-Daly Field with a record
of 2-3-2. In its last outing, Davidson
played North Florida to a scoreless draw.
Also highlighting their recent results was a 1-1 tie versus
Clemson. In the 89th minute, Davidson's
senior forward Rachael Newmister tied the Clemson affair off a corner
kick. On the season, junior Tori Krause
has tallied a team-best four points off two goals. Sophomore Stephanie Piperno has netted one
score and one helper, while sophomore Julia Singley has scored one goal.
News and Notes:
- The Tribe enters Sunday's match on a five-game winning
streak and has not surrendered a goal during that span. The five consecutive shutouts are the most
since the 2000 season, when the Tribe blanked five straight opponents. The most consecutive shutouts registered by any
Green and Gold squad came during the 1996 season, after the College held the
opposition scoreless in eight straight matches.
- William and Mary freshman goalkeeper Caroline Casey was honored as the Colonial Athletic Association Rookie of the Week on Monday, Sept. 10. Casey earned the distinction after posting consecutive shutouts over Villanova and Seton Hall at the Villanova Invitational last weekend. The Chesapeake, Va., native tallied 10 saves en route to earning all-tournament team accolades. Through seven contests this season, she has tallied 26 saves and owns a goal against average of 0.75. Among her highlights this season was a career-high nine-save effort at Tennessee.
- In this week's NSCAA poll, the Tribe is receiving votes, while being tabbed No. 1 in the NSCAA Mid-Atlantic rankings. The College is ranked No. 41 per TopDrawerSoccer.com's week five rankings of the nation's top-64 teams.
- All-time, the College is 1-0 against Davidson. In its only meeting in 1990, the Green and Gold defeated the Wildcats, 9-0, in Davidson, N.C.
- Sunday's match against Davidson will kickoff a three-game homestand for the Tribe. After facing the Wildcats, the College will host former CAA foe Virginia Commonwealth on Thursday, Sept. 20. The Green and Gold will conclude the stretch with its CAA opener against James Madison on Sunday, Sept. 23.
