CARY, N.C. - The William and Mary men's tennis team opened the fall
season on Friday at the Duke Fab Four Invitational. Senior Jamie Whiteford
highlighted the Tribe's singles effort with a win in his opening round match of
the Blue Flight, while a pair of Tribe doubles teams picked up wins over North
Carolina duos as well.
In singles action, Whiteford opened his fall slated with a 6-3, 6-0 win over Virginia Tech's Aaron Gomez. It marked his 47th career singles victory. The 43rd-ranked player in the country will continue singles action tomorrow when he faces Duke's Josh Levine in the quarterfinals at 11:30 a.m. Whiteford's second match on Saturday will be at 2:30 p.m. against either Jason Tahir of Duke or Alabama's Jarryd Botha.
After falling in their opening singles matches on Friday, juniors Ben Guthrie and John Banks as well as sophomore Aaron Chaffee will compete in the consolation draw of their respective flights. In the Black Flight, Guthrie will face Virginia Tech's Mauricio Antun, while Chaffee will meet North Carolina's William Parker with both matches scheduled for 11:30 a.m. Banks squares off with Radford's Thomas Dehaen at 11:30 a.m. in the consolation side of the White Flight. All three Tribe players' second matches on Saturday will be at 2:30 p.m.
In doubles action, junior Ben Hoogland and sophomore Will Juggins opened with an 8-6 win over James Coxe and Stuart Depaolo of North Carolina, before falling to Duke's Jason Tahir and Michael Redlicki in the semifinals of the White Flight. The Tribe duo will face Radford's Joe Mills and Stijn Meulemans in the third-place match tomorrow at 9 a.m.
Guthrie and Banks dropped their opening round match in the Black Doubles Flight, but rallied to upended North Carolina's William Parker and Brett Clark, 8-3, in the consolation semifinals. The Tribe juniors will face Kentucky's Juan-Pablo Murra and Ryuji Hirooka in the consolation finals at 9 a.m. on Saturday.
In the Blue Flight, Whiteford and Chaffee fell twice on the opening day of the Invite. They will wrap up doubles play on Saturday morning against Kentucky's Anthony Rossi and Panav Jha at 9 a.m.
The Tribe will continue action at the Fab Four Invitational on Saturday. Doubles play will conclude with a the final round at 9 a.m., before two rounds of singles at 11:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m.
