WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - A second-half Maria Caro goal and a stingy Tribe defensive
effort led the William and Mary field hockey team to a 1-0 upset of No.
11-ranked Boston University on Friday night at Busch Field. After falling from
the ranks of the unbeaten on Tuesday night against No. 9 Virginia, the Green
and Gold knocked off its highest ranked opponent since the 2004 season. W&M
improved to 6-1 on the year, while the Terriers fell to 5-2.

Neither team generated much on the offensive end in the opening 35 minutes of play as Boston outshot the Tribe, 3-1, in the first half. Possession was the name of the game in the first half as the opening frame did not see a penalty corner. Redshirt freshman goalkeeper Cate Johnson made a pair of first-half saves defensively to keep the Terriers at bay.
The Tribe broke the scoreless deadlock just over seven minutes into the second half. Senior Ashley Kyle generated the Tribe's first penalty corner of the game at the 42:06 mark. BU goalkeeper Jess Maroney blocked her initial shot, but the ball deflected off the foot of a Terrier player resulting in the penalty corner.
On the ensuing opportunity, Caro cashed in her first goal of the season as she lifted a shot from the top of the circle. It marked her sixth career tally and ended up being her second career game-winning goal. Sophomore Jesse Ebner and junior Chaney Manganello each registered assists on the play. It was Manganello's team-leading fourth assist and Ebner's third of the year.
Over six minutes later, BU had a chance to pull even off a penalty corner, but was turned away twice by Johnson. In the 50th minute, the Tribe goalkeeper made a sprawling save on a hard shot from the top of the circle by Anne Frutiema, before coming up with the kick save on Jacinda McLeod's rebound shot from the right side.
All together, Johnson finished the night with six saves, including four in the second half, to earn her first career shutout. Boston University outshot W&M, 7-6, on the evening, while both teams generated two penalty corners, all in the second half.
The Green and Gold returns to action on Sunday when it welcomes Miami (Ohio) to Williamsburg. The match carries a noon start time at Busch Field. W&M will be shooting for its first 7-1 start to the year since the 2000 season.
