The William and Mary field hockey team got a double-dose of good news Tuesday, as the Colonial Athletic Association selected a pair of Tribe players for weekly honors. Senior captain Maria Caro (Martinsville, N.J.) was named co-Player of the Week, while redshirt-freshman Cate Johnson (Charlottesville, Va.) earned the honor of Rookie of the Week.
Caro scored both of W&M's game-winners last weekend, with what were also her first two goals of the season. Her penalty-corner strike in the 43rd minute Friday night was the only goal scored in the Tribe's 1-0 upset of No. 11 Boston University, and on Sunday, she again found the boards off a penalty corner to start the College on the way to a 2-1 win over Miami.
On the other end of the field, Johnson earned credit for the two victories while playing all 140 minutes in goal. Against the Terriers on Friday, she made six saves while completing her first career shut-out. Sunday, she made seven saves against the Redhawks, including five in the final six minutes to preserve the 2-1 victory. For the week, she stopped 13 of 14 shots (92.9%) made against her, while improving her season record to a perfect 3-0.
William and Mary, newly ranked at No. 20 in the NFHCA coaches poll, takes on No. 8 Northeastern in its next game. The Tribe will face the Huskies in Boston at 7 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 21, before continuing on to Long Island and a match with the Hofstra Pride Sunday at 12 p.m.
