WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - On
Friday, Oct. 19, the William and Mary baseball team in conjunction with the
Tribe Closer's Club, will host the first annual Tommy Smith Memorial Golf
Outing on the Blue Heron Course at Ford's Colony Country Club. The annual event, which supports the Tribe
baseball program, has been re-named in honor of the life and contributions of
the late Smith, who was a life-long friend and supporter of William and Mary
baseball.
"Tommy was a great friend of the baseball program and the
entire athletic department," stated head baseball coach Jamie Pinzino. "He and
his wife, Josie, were fixtures at our games and was a friend to generations of
players and their parents. This
tournament is the combination of two things he truly loved in life, golf and
Tribe baseball."
Smith, a local businessman and an influential presence in
the Williamsburg community, shared an uncompromised passion for William and
Mary Athletics, and most notably, the baseball team. More than just a fan, Mr. Smith was the
leader of the Closer's Club, an organization dedicated to raising much needed
operating funds for the Tribe baseball program.
This past spring, the William and Mary athletics department
teamed with the Smith Family in creating an endowed baseball scholarship in his
and Josie's name. The endowment was
announced along with the re-naming of the Plumeri Suite in his honor prior to
W&M's contest against Norfolk State on April 28.
The golf outing, which is a captain's choice format, will
get underway on the Ford's Colony Blue Herring Course in a 1 p.m. shotgun
start. To register for the 2012 Tommy
Smith Memorial Golf Outing, click on the registration form in the boxed link.
