The William and Mary women's cross country team opened a lot of eyes around the country Friday morning, pulling off an astonishing second-place finish at the Brooks Paul Short Invitational.  The Tribe scored 102 points to finish behind only Cornell (55 points), beating No. 4 Georgetown (the defending national champions), No. 7 Providence, and No. 9 Villanova in the process.  Dartmouth's All-American Abbey D'Agostino won the individual title comfortably in 19:58.

The Tribe was lead by its own All-American, with junior Elaina Balouris (Allison Park, Pa.) finishing fifth overall at 20:29.  Freshman Emily Stites (Wyoming, Ohio) was right on her shoulder and finished just steps behind Balouris in sixth.  Classmate Meghan McGovern (North Wales, Pa.) gave W&M three in the top-20, crossing the line 19th in 20:56.  Both freshmen were making their Tribe debuts after two strong unattached showings earlier this season.  Sophomore Jess Cygan (Bethlehem, Pa.) ran 21:07 for 34th place in front of the hometown crowd, and junior Clarissa Schick (Richmond, Va.) finished out the scoring in 38th overall, crossing the finish line with a time of 21:13.  Sophomore Dylan Hassett (Alpharetta, Ga.) and senior Katie Buenaga (Greenville, Del.) rounded out the team effort, finishing 59th and 62nd, respectively.

William and Mary is back in action in two weeks, Sat., Oct. 13, with a split-squad weekend.  The varsity runners will head out to Louisville, Ky., for the Pre-National Invitational and an early look at the NCAA Championships course.  The remainder of the team will host the Tribe Open in Williamsburg, taking on runners from around the state and the region.
