BLACKSBURG, Va. - The William and Mary women's tennis team completed a perfect
Saturday in doubles action at the 19th annual Hokie Invitational. Both Tribe
doubles teams won their consolation matches, while senior
Anik Cepeda won both
her consolation matches on the afternoon.
In Flight A doubles, Cepeda and junior
Hope Johnson won for
the second time in as many days as they rolled to an 8-3 victory over Sarah
Evans and Guinn Garcia of Wofford. The Tribe duo will compete in the
fifth-place match of Flight A on Sunday morning at 9 a.m. against the East
Tennessee State team of Antonia Kolovou and Larn McShane.
Junior
Sydney Smith and senior
Nina Vulovich won their
second straight doubles contest, downing Wofford's Audrey Coventry and
Tessa Johnson, 8-2, in the consolation side of Flight B. The Tribe tandem faces
the Virginia Tech team of Emily Lauten and Megan Conley in the consolation
final at 9 a.m. on Sunday morning.
Cepeda rallied from a set deficit to defeat Radford's Gemma
Valls in three sets in her first match of the consolation side in Flight A.
After the Highlander player took the first set, 6-4, Cepeda forced a third-set
super tiebreaker with a 6-2 triumph in the second. The Tribe senior claimed her
first win of the 2012 fall season with a 10-4 win over Valls in the third set. She
capped the day with a dominating 6-2, 6-0 triumph over Sarah Evans of Wofford
for her second win of the day. Cepeda will face Virginia Tech's Carol Kahoun in the consolation final of the top singles flight on Sunday.
After winning her opening round singles match on Friday,
Vulovich was forced to retire in the second set of her quarterfinal match due
to illness. UNCW's Kelly Cameron won the opening set, 6-3, in the Flight C match
and led 1-0 in the second, before Vulovich retired.
Smith notched her second singles victory of the fall season,
winning in the consolation side of Flight B. After dropping her opening match
of the day, the Tribe junior bounced back in rolling to a 6-2, 6-1 victory over
Radford's Hana Babic. Smith will face UMBC's Isabel Aldunate in her final
consolation match of the Invite on Sunday.
The final day of the Hokie Invitational will get underway on
Sunday with doubles at 9 a.m. Singles competition will follow to close out he
event.
