WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - The William and Mary women's tennis team closed out
play at the 20th annual Tribe Invitational on Sunday at the McCormack-Nagelsen
Tennis Center. Weather in Williamsburg forced the final day indoors, and the
Green and Gold closed out competition with a trio of singles wins.
Junior
Maria Belaya
wrapped up the Tribe Invite at 2-1 in singles competition, winning the
third-place match in the Megan Moulton-Levy. Belaya improved to 4-3 overall on
the season with a dominating 6-1, 6-2 victory over Penn's Stephanie Do.
A pair of matches on
Sunday pitted Tribe teammates against one another. In the fifth-place match of
Kristine Kurth Singles Flight, senior
Nina Vulovich evened her singles ledger
at 4-4 with a 6-2, 6-0 victory over sophomore teammate
Sydney Smith. In the
fifth-place match of the Lauren Nikolaus Singles Flight it was junior
Hope Johnson getting the better
of freshman teammate
Leeza Nemchinov in three sets, 7-6 (4), 3-6, 7-6 (5). Johnson upped her season mark to 4-3 with the victory.
VCU's Olga Terteac
won the Megan Moulton-Levy Singles Flight over Kansas' Maria Belen Luduena, who
retired after trailing, 7-5, 0-1. In the Lauren Nikolaus Singles Flight, Devan
McCluskey of Penn State took the title with a three set win, 5-7, 6-3, 10-5,
over Harvard's Amanda Lin. Hai-Li Kong of Harvard won the Cherie Dow Singles
Flight, 6-1, 6-0, over Penn's Alex Ion, while Kansas' Claire Dreyer took
home the Julie Shiflet Singles Flight with a 6-2, 6-0 win over Harvard's
Crystal Yen.
Old Dominion's Nika Khmolovska downed JMU's Jacqueline
Palmucci to win the Margie Waters Singles Flight in three sets, 7-5, 2-6, 10-5.
Victoria Khanevskaya of Kansas won the Marion Gengler Singles Flight over Penn
State's Sarah Henderson, 6-2, 7-6 (5).
The Tribe returns to action when it
takes part in the in the ITA Atlantic Regional, Oct. 19-23. Virginia Tech will
host the regional at the Burleson-Burrows Tennis Center in Blacksburg.
