The William and Mary men's golf team continued to play good, steady golf Tuesday in the final round of the Georgetown Invitational, finishing in sixth overall and just one shot out of fifth at 879 (+27). Toledo won the 12-team event by two strokes over Notre Dame, and the Rockets also provided the individual champion in Chris Selfridge, who shot 208 (-5) on the par-71, 6953-yard course.
The Tribe led the tournament with 185 pars, and shot par or better on 207 of the 216 holes that counted for the team score (95.8%) while improving each round by a stroke. Leading the way as he has all year was senior Jeremy Wells (Hopewell, Va.), who shot a one-under 70 on the final day to improve to 211 (-2) overall and finished in third place. It is Wells' seocnd top-four finish of the year (fourth at the Joe Agee Invitational), and his season-average of 71.67 is on-pace to break the W&M school record of 71.87 (Brent Paladino '09 in 2007-08). Sophomore Alex Hicks (Cape May Court House, N.J.) carded 74 on Tuesday, matching his second round score, and finished in a tie for 24th at 8-over (221). Junior Tanner Taddeo (Hendersonville, Tenn.) turned in a score of 73 to finish one stroke back, in a tie for 28th, and classmate Michael Bekken (Blacksburg, Va.) shot 75 in the final round and finished tied for 42nd at 226 (+13). Junior Patrick Leisure (Charlottesville, Va.) rounded out the team effort in 64th place.
William and Mary has a quick turnaround this week before the final tournament of the fall season. The Tribe will be on Kiawah Island, S.C. from Sunday-Tuesday, Oct. 28-30, for the Kiawah Island Invitational.
