WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - The
William and Mary women's basketball team defeated Mary Washington, 74-33, in
exhibition play on Wednesday night at Kaplan Arena. The College raced out to an early advantage
against the Eagles and never looked back. Senior forward Emily Correal led the Green
and Gold attack with 14 points on 6-of-11 shooting from the floor, while
sophomore guard Kyla Kerstetter chipped in 14 points and was a perfect 6-of-6
from the free-throw line.
Junior forward Kaitlyn Mathieu tallied 10 points and was
2-of-4 from 3-point range, while senior guard Janine Aldridge netted 10 points
and three asissts. Senior forward Taylor
Hilton finished the contest with 10 rebounds to go along with six points. Freshman Brooke Stewart poured in eight
points on 3-of-5 shooting from the field, while collecting four boards.
Correal paced the Tribe with 12 points and seven rebounds in
the opening half, while Aldridge chimed in with seven. W&M jumped out to an early 16-6 advantage
and led by as many as 19 points after Correal laid it in off the glass with 7:17
remaining in the stanza, giving W&M the 29-10 edge. With 36 seconds left in the half, sophomore
Jazmen Boone gave the College a 36-19 lead after the Virginia Beach, Va.,
native tallied her first points of the night on a lay up.
In the second half, W&M's defense was the story as it
held the Eagles to 14 points. Boone and
Kerstetter led the way as the duo finished the night with five steals apiece. Sophomore MacKenzie Morrison gave the Tribe
its largest margin of the night, 72-28, after the Norwalk, Iowa native netted a
jumper at the 3:52 mark.
The Tribe finished the night shooting 29-of-70 (41.4
percent) from the floor and 6-of-20 (30 percent) from 3-point territory. Additionally, the Green and Gold recorded 45
rebounds, 24 steals and 22 assists.
The Tribe returns to action on Sunday, as it closes its
exhibition slate against Davis & Elkins. Tip-off from Kaplan Arena is
slated for 2 p.m., and the contest is opened to the public free of charge.
