Philadelphia, Pa. - William
and Mary junior defender Will Smith was selected to the All Colonial Athletic
Association Third-Team on Thursday night at the league's annual awards banquet
hosted at Drexel University. The
distinction is the second for Smith, who earned second-team accolades last
season.
"We are very happy for and proud of Will," stated head coach
Chris Norris. "He is a talented student-athlete, but most importantly he works
extremely hard, is very professional and puts the needs of the team first. We
are certainly happy to have him back for another year as his ability and
leadership will be critical to our progress."
The stalwart of the Tribe's back line, Smith started all 18
matches for the Green and Gold this season.
The Avon, Mass., native scored his first collegiate goal against Georgia
State on Oct. 10. In the 60th minute,
off of junior Roshan Patel's free kick from 45 yards away, Smith corralled the
service and proceeded to shelve the Tribe's only goal of the contest.
The two-time all-league performer also scored the
game-winner in W&M's last home match against Delaware. With the match tied at 2-2, senior Ben Anderson's corner kick set piece found Smith, who headed in the difference
maker in the 70th minute.
Smith's inclusion on the All-CAA Third Team
makes it the sixth consecutive year that a member of the Tribe has taken home
postseason all-league honors.
Additionally, he is the 16th player in school history to earn multiple
All-CAA distinctions.
