The William and Mary men's track and field team opened the 2012-13 indoor season Saturday, competing at two meets.  While the jumpers competed out in Lynchburg, Va., at the Liberty Kickoff, the majority of the squad went up to the Navy Invitational in Annapolis, Md., and returned with four IC4A qualifications, two wins, and a freshman record.

Liberty Results

3,000m Run

The first of the Tribe's four IC4A-qualifying marks came in the 3,000m, where senior John Muller (LaGrangeville, N.Y.) ran 8:26.16 to win the event.  It was Muller's first collegiate victory.  Also in the 3,000m, freshman Ryan Gousse (Apopka, Fla.) was fifth, running 8:33.58.

5,000m Run
The other three qualifying marks all came in the 5,000m.  Senior Alex McGrath (Marlborough, N.H.) led the way in 14:24.20, finishing second overall.  Josh Hardin (Sterling, Va.), the defending IC4A Champion in the event, was fourth in 14:36.10, and Rad Gunzenhauser (Pittsburgh, Pa.) was fifth in 14:41.00.

35-lbs Weight Throw

In the weight throw, the first event of the day, freshman Taylor Frenia (Virginia Beach, Va.) got his career off to a strong start with an eighth-place throw of 15.32 meters (50-3.25).  That toss ranks him 12th all-time at the College, and broke the Tribe's freshman record by nearly nine inches.  The old rookie record of 49-6.5 was set by Chris Parsons '04 at CNU in February of 2001.

Distance Medley Relay

The Tribe also got a victory in the DMR, crossing the finish line in 10:24.66.  Ian MacFawn (LaVale, Md.) led off the relay, which also saw Mark Moran (McLean, Va.) run the 400m leg and Ricky Cappetta (Stafford, Va.) on the 800m, before David Gunnerson (Yorktown, Va.) brought the baton home in the mile.

4x800m Relay

W&M's 4x800m relay was third overall in 8:07.56.  That quartet was led-off by Gunnerson, who handed the stick to MacFawn, Dmitri Zuccarello (Brooklyn, N.Y.), and Cappetta in turn.

High Jump

Out at Liberty, the day's top performance belonged to senior Ben Katz (Manakin-Sabot, Va.), who took fourth with a height of 1.94m (6-4.25).

1,500m Run
Zuccarello also rounded out the day's notables with his individual fifth-place showing in the 1,500m run, crossing the finish in 4:02.44.

William and Mary is back in action next weekend, competing at the CNU Holiday Open on Saturday, Dec. 8.
