Scouting the Tribe
The College heads to
Cornell this weekend with an overall record of 2-7. In its last outing, W&M fell at North
Carolina A&T, 85-78, as senior Emily Correal tallied a career-high 30
points against the Aggies.
Correal leads the Tribe attack averaging a Colonial Athletic
Association best 19.3 points per game to go along with 8.2 rebounds per outing. Classmate Janine Aldridge is pouring in 13.3
ppg, while her 25 3-pointers on the season are tied for tops in the conference. Senior Taylor Hilton is netting 10.2 points
per outing, while her team-high 30 assists rank fifth in the league.
As a team, the College's 66.7 ppg rank third in the CAA,
while its scoring defense of 69.3 sits in tenth. W&M ranks first in the league with 107
steals, while its 140 assists stands in second.
Furthermore, the Tribe's 61 3-pointers rank third, while its free-throw
percentage of .686 sits in fourth.
Scouting Cornell
Under the direction of tenth-year head coach Dayna Smith
Cornell plays host to the Tribe with a record of 5-5. In its last contest, the Big Red dropped a
53-40 decision at Texas on Dec. 20.
Junior Allyson DiMagno paced Cornell against the Longhorns with 13
points and seven rebounds, while senior Clare Fitzpatrick added 10 points.
For the year, DiMagno is averaging 13.8 points ppg to go
along with 11.5 rebounds per outing. At
one time, DiMagno was averaging 12.5 boards per contest, which ranked fifth in
America. Fitzpatrick is the Big Red's
second leading scorer averaging 11.3 per game.
As a team, Cornell is scoring 58.0 points per contest, while
allowing 61.2. Cornell has scored 60 or
more points in each of its victories this season. On the flip side, in four setbacks, the Big
Red have failed to reach the 60-point mark.
News and Notes:
- Sunday's game will the second meeting between the Tribe
and Cornell, as W&M owns a 1-0 series edge.
Last year, the College opened its season with an 85-54 blowout victory
over the Big Red. At halftime, the Tribe
owned a 41-33 advantage as it posted 44 second-half points, while holding Cornell
to just 21. In the victory, senior
Janine Aldridge scored a game-high 24 points, which included a 5-for-6 effort
from 3-point range. Classmates Jaclyn McKenna and Emily Correal poured in 20 and 16 points, respectively.
- Against Ivy League competition, the College owns a record of
10-9. Furthermore, W&M currently
owns winning ledgers against Penn (3-1), Dartmouth (2-1) and Cornell (1-0).
- Through nine games of the 2012-13 season, senior Emily Correal has been impressive. The
Venetia, Pa., native opened the season against East Carolina with 24 points and
21 rebounds as she became only the third player in program history to tally 20
points and 20 rebounds in a game. In her
return home to the Pittsburgh area, Correal backed up an impressive debut with
27 points and 10 rebounds in the College's tilt at Pitt. For her opening week efforts, she was named
the Colonial Athletic Association Player of the Week on Nov. 12. Correal earned the player of the week
distinction again on Dec. 10, after she scored 21 points at Navy before pouring
in 28 points against Radford.
Additionally, in the contest at Radford, she became the 16th player in
school history to reach the 1,000 career-point milestone. In W&M's last outing at North Carolina
A&T, Correal netted a career-high 30 points on 10-of-16 shooting from the
floor.
- Sophomore point-guard Anna Kestler earned her first
collegiate start at North Carolina A&T and posted career-highs in assists
and steals. Kestler dished out a
career-best seven assists, while recording a career-high five steals against the
Aggies.
- After Sunday's game at Cornell, the Tribe will return to
Kaplan Arena on Jan. 2, as it plays host to Winthrop. The contest against the Eagles will be the
Tribe's first home game since it defeated Virginia Union, 78-44, on Nov. 14. The Green and Gold's seven consecutive road
tilts have covered five states and 5,612 miles, which is the equivalent
of traveling from Miami, Fla., to Anchorage, Alaska.
- The College's Colonial Athletic Association opener is
right around the corner, at Hofstra on Jan. 6, as the Tribe will conclude
non-conference play against Winthrop on Jan. 2.
The contest at Hofstra will begin a three-game stretch in five days for
the Green and Gold. After the matching
up with the Pride, W&M will return home to face UNCW (Jan. 8) before
another road game at Northeastern (Jan. 10).
