WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - After
seven consecutive road games, the William and Mary women's basketball team
returns to Kaplan Arena as it faces the Winthrop Eagles on Wednesday night. Tip-off from Williamsburg is slated for 7
p.m., and fans can follow the action online at TribeAthletics.com with live
video and stats.
All Tribe basketball home games will be available at TribeAthletics
TV. Fans can purchase an annual TribeAthletics TV package (12 months)
for $69.95. The four-month TribeAthletics TV lineup is available for $39.95,
while fans will be able to buy monthly passes at a price of $10.95 each.
Scouting the Tribe
For the year, the College owns a record of 2-8, but four of
its setbacks have come by six points or less.
In its last outing, W&M fell at Cornell, 60-56, as junior
Kaitlyn Mathieu led the way with 13 points, while senior
Taylor Hilton pulled down a
career-high 13 rebounds. The Tribe cut a
late second-half deficit down to two and was on the cusp of tying the affair in
the final seconds, but Cornell came up with a defensive stop to secure the
victory.
Senior Emily Correal is pouring in a Colonial Athletic
Association best 17.8 ppg, to go along with 7.9 rebounds per game, which are
tied for seventh. Classmate Janine Aldridge's 13 points per outing rank 11th in the league, while her 28
3-pointers rank second. Senior Taylor Hilton continues her efficient season as she ranks tops in the CAA with an
assist-to-turnover ratio of 2.3. In
addition, Hilton's 3.2 assists per contest rank fifth.
As a team, the College's 65.6 points per game rank fifth in
the CAA. Defensively, the Green and Gold
is allowing 68.4 points per contest, which stands in 10th. The Tribe ranks
first in the CAA averaging 12 steals per outing, while its 15.4 assists per
game rank second. From beyond the arc,
W&M's 65 treys on the year sit in second, while its 3-point field goal
percentage of .355 ranks third.
Scouting the Eagles
Under the direction of first-year head coach Kevin Cook,
Winthrop will enter Kaplan Arena with a record of 6-6. The Eagles are currently riding a two-game
losing streak with its consecutive setbacks coming against Liberty (90-57) and
Saint Louis (62-53). In its five road
contests this season, Winthrop has posted a ledger of 2-3. Wednesday night's tilt will be the second of
a six-game road trip for the Eagles.
Junior Dequesha McClanahan leads Winthrop with 17.2 ppg,
which ranks third in the Big South Conference.
Senior Diana Choibekova is pouring in 14.5 points per outing and is Winthrop's
top threat from 3-point territory. For
the year, Choibekova has netted a team-high 41 3-pointers, which are tops in
the Big South.
Offensively, the Eagles are scoring 66.0 points
per contest, which ranks third in the Big South. On the flip side, the Eagles rank 10th in the
conference allowing 69.9 points per tilt.
News and Notes:
- Wednesday night's game will be the sixth meeting between
W&M and Winthrop, as the College owns a 5-0 series lead. The schools last met during the 1998-99
season when the Green and Gold defeated the Eagles, 61-49.
- Against Big South competition W&M owns an all-time
record of 52-64. However, the Green and
Gold owns winning ledgers against Liberty (11-7), Winthrop (5-0), Gardner-Webb
(3-0), Campbell (2-0), Charleston Southern (2-0), UNC-Asheville (2-1) and
Coastal Carolina (1-0).
- The Tribe returns to Kaplan Arena on
Wednesday night after seven consecutive road games. The contest against Winthrop will be the
Tribe's first home game since it defeated Virginia Union, 78-44, on Nov.
14. The latest road stint has covered five states and 5,612 miles, which
is the equivalent of traveling from Miami, Fla., to Anchorage, Alaska.
- The contest against Winthrop will be the College's final
non-conference game of the 2012-13 season.
The Tribe opens Colonial Athletic Association play on Sunday, Jan. 6, at
Hofstra.
- Sophomore point-guard
Anna Kestler earned her
first collegiate start at North Carolina A&T and posted career-highs in
assists and steals. Kestler dished out a career-best seven assists, while
recording a career-high five steals against the Aggies.
