WILLIAMSBURG, Va. (Jan. 13, 2013) - The William and Mary men's gymnastics team opened its 2013 season with a good showing at the State Open at Kaplan Arena on Sunday afternoon, as three Tribe gymnasts combined to claim five individual event titles.

Junior Landon Funiciello led W&M with three individual event titles (floor, rings, parallel bars), while freshman Keaton Ackerman and sophomore Michael Deitz posted the top scores on pommel horse and vault, respectively.

The College opened the meet on floor where Funiciello won the event title with a 13.65. Freshmen Simon Casey and Ackerman also performed well in their first collegiate meet and earned a 13.4 and a 13.1, respectively.

W&M then moved to pommel horse, as Ackerman recorded the top score in the event with a 13.95. Junior Daniel Potemski (13.65) and sophomore Peter Ten Eyck (13.55) also came up big and rounded out the top three scorers.

One of the highlights of the competition was Funiciello's performance on rings where the Baldwinsville, N.Y., native nearly matched his career high with a 15.4 to win the event. Potemski placed second with a 13.65.

Deitz tied for top honors on vault with a 14.0, while Ackerman placed third with a 13.8.

Funiciello earned his third event title of the afternoon in the meet's fifth rotation, as he registered a 14.4 on parallel bars. Potemski placed second with a 13.6, while Yeager garnered third-place distinction with a 13.5.

Ackerman was the College's top finisher on high bar with a 13.0.

In addition to W&M, the other teams represented at this year's State Open were James Madison and Apollo Gymnastics, as well as unattached former Tribe standouts Dave Ellis and Kyle Sneeden. This year's State Open was an individual championship with no team scoring.

The Tribe will return to action next weekend when it competes at the Navy Open on Saturday at 2 p.m.
