WEST POINT, N.Y. (March 2, 2013) - Competing
in an exciting dual meet that came down to the final event, the No. 13 William
and Mary men's gymnastics team defeated No. 14 Army, 411.35 - 409.4, on
Saturday afternoon at Gross Sports Center in West Point, N.Y.
In addition to
claiming the top team score on vault with a season-high 71.95, W&M also
posted the best team marks on rings and high bar. The high bar differential of
67.350 - 61.350 was especially significant in the tightly contested dual meet.
Individually,
junior Landon Funiciello claimed individual event titles on vault (15.050) and
parallel bars (14.6), while freshman Neal Courter posted the meet's top score
on high bar (13.9).
Courter led
the Tribe on floor with a 14.55 and placed third overall en route to helping
the team earn a 70.1 in the event.
The Green and
Gold posted a team score of 66.4 on pommel horse and was led by sophomores
Peter Ten Eyck (13.650) and Jason Wang (13.6), who placed fourth and fifth,
respectively.
Funiciello
(14.7) and junior Daniel Potemski (14.2) were W&M's top two performers on
rings and placed second and third, respectively, en route to helping the squad
total a 68.35.
The Tribe
tallied a season-high 71.95 on vault and was led by Funiciello's winning score
of 15.050, which represented a season high. Courter also came up big with a
career-high 14.850 to place second.
Funiciello
also highlighted W&M's performances on parallel bars, as his winning score
of 14.6 helped the squad record a 67.2.
The Green and
Gold posted the top three marks on high bar, as Courter (13.9), Potemski (13.8)
and sophomore J.J. Jindra (13.4) led the way in what proved to be a decisive event
in determining the dual meet's winner.
The Tribe will return to action
tomorrow when it competes in a dual meet at Springfield.
