Tribe Men Earn Historic Silver Trophy at CAA Championships

The William and Mary men's swimming team wrapped up a historic week Saturday night at the Colonial Athletic Association Championships, winning three more events and finishing second in the league.  UNCW won its 12th title in a row with 674.5 points, ahead of the Tribe (633.5) and George Mason (591).

The performance was historic for a number of reasons, not the least of which that junior Andrew Strait (Henrico, Va.) was named co-Swimmer of the Meet after winning three individual championships and helping his team to another on the 800 free relay.  He is the first man to win Swimmer of the Meet or Swimmer of the Year since Pete McIntosh '65 won Swimmer of the Year in the Southern Conference in 1965.  The Tribe won eight gold medals on the week, the most-ever at a conference meet, and scored a program-record number of points.  The second-place finish matches the best-ever for W&M, last achieved by the 1999 team.

Complete Results

1650 Free
The first final of the night was the 1650 freestyle, where Kemp Pettyjohn (Lynchburg, Va.) won his second event of the meet with a time of 15:25.48.  It was an NCAA-qualifying performance, and made Pettyjohn the first man in school history win the mile at a conference meet.  Senior Kyle McVeigh (Jacksonville, Fla.) finished out his career with a seventh-place 15:48.44, and Tyler Poling (Morristown, N.J.) was 12th in 15:55.75.  Both Poling's mile time and his 1,000-yard split of 9:36.57 improved him to seventh in school history in those events.

200 Back
In the 200 back, freshman Justin Barden (Gordonsville, Va.) took bronze with a time of 1:46.74, and senior Sidney Glass (Mechanicsville, Va.) was sixth in 1:48.68.  Freshman Will Manion (Haddonfield, N.J.) placed eighth overall in 1:50.94, and senior Evan Rutherford (Newport News, Va.) closed out his career timing 1:49.18 for 13th.

100 Free
Senior Hunter Perrot (Falls Church, Va.) set the first of his two school records on the night in the consolation finals of the 100 free, cruising to a 10th-place finish in 45.20.  The time broke the school record set in 2009 by Kevin Gallagher '09 by 0.02 seconds.

200 Breast
Strait's third championship of the week was won going away, as he cruised to a school-record and NCAA-qualifying time of 1:58.93 in the 200 breast.  Jeremiah O'Donnell (Chapel Hill, N.C.) was fifth overall, breaking his own freshman record in 2:02.16 to rank third in school history.  Sophomore Chris Dong (Chapel Hill, N.C.) was eighth overall in 2:05.86, and freshman Charley Bowles (Yorktown, Va.) was 13th with a personal-best 2:03.88, improving to fifth all-time at W&M.

200 Fly
The 200 fly was another Tribe win with style, a coronation for senior K.J. Shaw (Richmond, Va.) who won his first conference title in his last race with an NCAA-qualifying 1:46.92.  He had previously set the conference record in the prelims at 1:46.51.  Freshman Ryan Natal (Great Falls, Va.) was 11th overall in 1:50.63, chasing down half of the consolation finals over the last 50 yards.

400 Free Relay
The final points of the meet came in the 400 free relay, where the team of Perrot, Glass, Taegan Clarke (Chappaqua, N.Y), and Ben Ward (Maitland, Fla.) took fifth in 3:02.31.  Perrot led the relay with a 45.09, broking his own school record set just an hour earlier, and providing W&M with its 30th school record of the week.
